Community Highlights: Meet Joseph Turley of PipeView Services

Today we’d like to introduce you to Joseph Turley.

Hi Joseph, so excited to have you with us today. What can you tell us about your story?
A large part of success is based on the accumulation of experience. We gather information and moments that teach us how to be better people throughout our lives. When I think of my life experiences, there are probably three pivotal moments that significantly influenced me on how to build a solid foundation in my professional life.

The first one started shortly after I graduated high school. I left on a full-time mission for my church for two years. I served in a foreign country and had minimal contact with my family. Serving a foreign mission helped me step outside of my comfort zone. I learned communication and teaching skills that still benefit me more than 20 years later.

The second pivotal moment happened after I returned from my mission. I enlisted in the army. During my time in the military, I deployed twice to combat zones overseas. I learned how to function in highly stressful environments. I also learned more leadership skills and what it takes to compel people to perform to the best of their abilities under duress. I implement some of that military culture into my current businesses today. While I was serving in the 10th Special Forces Group (Airborne), I took pride in being able to perform difficult activities. When my team completed challenging tasks, it proved that we were better than anyone else. I bring that attitude to my current work. My employees know they are the best in the industry. They prove that to themselves and our customers every day by finding solutions and completing jobs that no one else can handle.

My final pivotal moment was obtaining a Master of Business Administration (MBA) degree through Brigham Young University. I have directly applied the knowledge I gained during those two years to every aspect of business acquisition and ownership. This degree not only gave me the knowledge to help my companies succeed but also confidence that allowed me to step onto the entrepreneurial path and start this incredibly exciting journey.

Can you talk to us a bit about the challenges and lessons you’ve learned along the way. Looking back would you say it’s been easy or smooth in retrospect?
In general, nothing that is worth doing is usually easy. So I wouldn’t say that this has been a “smooth road” but it is also not an impossible road. The answers are always there somewhere. We just have to find them.

Some of the biggest challenges (and most exciting) are financial. Many people do not realize how expensive it is to grow a business. There are some companies that grow themselves into bankruptcy because they try to handle every job that comes their way. They are too busy to succeed! I try to bring a strong financial plan to every business that we acquire. I create a pro forma that projects our revenues and expenses. I use that to estimate our future levels of cash on hand on a monthly basis. This approach allows me to see multiple months into the future and recognize financial difficulties before they actually happen. I can also gauge the health of my businesses as I compare the actual revenues and expenses to my projections. Having a solid financial plan is instrumental to success, especially during a growth phase.

Thanks – so what else should our readers know about PipeView Services?
I am currently involved in three different companies, but my main focus is PipeView Services based out of Utah.

PipeView Services, originally founded in 2015, is veteran-owned and operated. Joseph Turley and Justin Turley took over the operation in 2018. PipeView is a proud member of the National Association of Sewer Service Companies (NASSCO), Associated General Contractors of Utah (AGC), and Rural Water Association of Utah (RWAU). All our operators are certified in PACP, LACP, and MACP. The company’s senior leadership has a combined 40+ years of experience in the pipeline and construction industries.

We are a one-stop-shop specializing in pipeline cleaning & CCTV inspection, air pressure & deflection testing, hydro-excavating, and manhole & catch basin cleaning, inspection, and rehabilitation.

We use the latest CCTV technology to assess manholes, sewers, and storm drain lines from 6″ to over 72″ looking for structural problems, leaks, or service lateral locations. Our utility testing crews can conduct air and deflection testing on sewer and storm drain lines, air leak locating, and test manholes and catch basins. The infrastructure repair & rehabilitation division can assist in lining repairs in pipes and manhole rehabilitation.

So maybe we end on discussing what matters most to you and why?
The company employees make a business successful, so people are what matter the most. Large businesses cannot afford to have a micro-managing owner. It is impossible to scale with a single person running all the operations. Scaleable companies hire the right people and give them enough leeway to succeed. As a business owner, my highest priority is to take care of the employees. The employees will take care of the business.
