Community Highlights: Meet Julia Rae of Altitude Fitness and Health

Today we’d like to introduce you to Julia Rae.

Hi Julia, please kick things off for us with an introduction to yourself and your story.
I was born with twisted feet, and was told at a young age I would be in a wheelchair. I also lived in an abusive home, and found that running away was the only answer. So one day I will write my book, which is already titled “Born running with Twisted Feet”

At 10 Months old I had to have my feet broken and put into cast due to club foot. I was a hyper (actually full of life) but restricted in the casts, I broke them off often and finally after several replacements I didn’t need them anymore.

I grew up in a broken home, with a mother who did not like me to much. She has codependent issues(, I didn’t find this out till later)
I could go into detail about the abuse, but I wont at this time. I just knew I was meant for better. So after 4 years of my mom being married to a drunk, I choose to run away. I ended up in the foster care system.
The funny thing about running is that you have to be able to run. I just got out, but my knees hurt to run and fell down all the time, my knees would just go out from under me. So after seeing the doctor at 15 he diagnosed me with some long word and told me I would be in a wheelchair at 40.
I choose to do different than my parents and different than my diagnosis.

At the age of 27 I had been over weight, going to nursing school and found out I had high blood pressure.
So I decided to change it around.
I started doing water aerobics because it didn’t hurt my knees.. I then started teaching water exercise, swimming and triathlon specific swimming. I then started doing triathlons all because of a good pair of shoes, a mother in law sick at home and a half hour to run.

I now teach people how to overcome health challenges, through fitness, nutrition, and mindset.

Now there is a lot more to this story, my point to my story, is life is hard but it’s suppose to be overcome.

We all face challenges, but looking back would you describe it as a relatively smooth road?
No it has not been easy, I have struggled with self esteem issues, beliefs of not worthy and health issues. I had cancer at 24, high blood pressure and almost died from giving birth to my daughter.

I have been married three times starting at 16, I have divorced twice due to choosing alcoholics.
I have worked on my codependency and had to do a lot of reflection of my own health mindset.

I have had to support myself financially, thank goodness for great mentors and my willingness to believe in better.

Thanks for sharing that. So, maybe next you can tell us a bit more about your business?
I started with my business, coaching and personal training, as an employee.
They decided they were going to close the doors, however I believed in their business model and choose to keep the doors open. We have personal training, nutrition coaching, mind set coaching.
We are expanding to massage, yoga, Thai chi and other healing modalities.
I believe we are different because the approach is more toward bringing a holistic approach to personal training, and getting healthy. Utilizing Nutrition, movement, and mind body connection.
I personally also work on the spiritual aspect, not from a religious standpoint, but from a self reflection of ones own desires, and intuitive calling.

I very proud of my team, the fact we have learned to grow together, and the fact that this is 30 year dream in the making.

We love surprises, fun facts and unexpected stories. Is there something you can share that might surprise us?
That I came from a lot of disfunction and health issues.
With all of that I over came each time growing and finding the lesson in all of it. This is how I help clients approach all issues, to learn to rise above it.
I believe life is a magical mystery tour, and it is meant to be experienced.
