Today we’d like to introduce you to Kade Beatty.
Kade, we appreciate you taking the time to share your story with us today. Where does your story begin?
I started working in the construction industry back in 2004 for an MEP engineering firm here in Southern Utah. During the 17 years I worked for that firm I learned a lot about construction and design and how things work during the construction of a new building and its various systems.
In 2020, my wife and I decided to build our first home and we enlisted a local builder to assist us with the design and their lead designer created a set of plans for us. During that process I found it very difficult to work with the designer to ensure that we get what we wanted and during the construction process there were so many issues that had not been coordinated during the design so we were forced to change various portions of the design. That is when I decided to make a change in careers. I was passionate about design and I knew I could solve the problem that we experienced to ensure that others had a more seamless experience with their design and construction process.
For the first few years, I did a few designs on the side while I remained fully employed by another firm learning the ins and outs of residential construction. In August of 2024 I felt confident enough to go full time as a Residential Home Designer and I started my own business as Lot99 Design Studio. When it came time to come up with the name for my business, I wanted it to have meaning and purpose behind it. I decided on Lot99 because that was the lot number for the home my wife and I built and what truly inspired this idea to pursue this new focus in careers and what I want to spend the rest of my life doing.
Since that time, I have worked on over 30 different custom residential designs in locations all across the nation. Texas, Florida, Ohio, California, Nebraska and of course here in Utah. I am extremely passionate about residential design and I am constantly learning about what is new and exciting in the industry so that I can adopt those same ideas into my designs. I love what I do and I believe that shows within my designs and the attention that I spend to the details in each and every custom home that I create.
Can you talk to us a bit about the challenges and lessons you’ve learned along the way. Looking back would you say it’s been easy or smooth in retrospect?
I wish I could say that it has been a smooth transition from the safety of full time employment to now owning my own business. It has not. There has been a tremendous learning curve and I have done things wrong and have had to stop and reset certain processes and strategies. I am learning, mostly via “the hard way”, how to run a business and how to set things up internally to ensure that I have a long and successful career as a Residential Home Designer.
There have been times when it has been extremely stressful and my confidence has been shaken on more than one occasion and there was even a time when I thought about going back to full time employment for the safety and security that offers. I have persisted and relied heavily upon my skills and abilities and reminding myself of my love for residential design. That is what keeps me moving forward and facing each new challenge that comes along.
We’ve been impressed with Lot99 Design Studio, but for folks who might not be as familiar, what can you share with them about what you do and what sets you apart from others?
I design custom homes for contractors and homeowners where each design is tailored to the individual I am designing for. Designs vary from 500 s.f. Accessory Dwelling Units to 12,000 s.f. luxury high-end custom homes and anything in between. Each project is approached and designed with the same attention to detail as the next. I specialize in more high-end design but no project is too small to consider. My focus is to ensure that whatever you need designed, I would love to collaborate with you on it.
Because I have over 17 years of experience working with MEP systems, I believe that is what sets me apart from other designers in my industry. I believe they are more than capable but often times those portions of the design are left out or unattended to. I ensure that those items are coordinated with and addressed during the design portion to help reduce issues in the field during construction.
The thing I am most proud of with my work is when a homeowner is truly happy with their design and their shared excitement about the project. That is what I want your readers to know about me and what I offer. I care about your project. I want to be as excited as you are about your new home, new garage, or pool house that you want built. Designing a home is a collaborative effort between me and the homeowner and I love being a part of that process.
Before we go, is there anything else you can share with us?
Always looking to improve, whether that is through adapting feedback on processes or continuing education. I am not the perfect designer now but check back in 5 years!
