Today, we’d like to introduce you to Kim Hibbs.
Hi Kim, can you start by introducing yourself? We’d love to learn more about how you got to where you are today.
In 2004, my wife Jan and I started Hibbs Homes with the goal of building the best homes possible by equally balancing the art and science of building.
At the time, many builders in our area were focused on growing bigger, building more homes, and doing it as quickly as possible. What we saw was a gap in the market when it came to quality of materials and durability of construction.
While building our home, we learned about high-performance buildings – at the time, commonly known as green home building. Many homeowners didn’t realize that green homes didn’t have to be all geodesic domes or have to sacrifice comfort in the name of conservation. When, in fact, a green home is more comfortable to live in and could look as much like the home next door as you want. That is what drove us to focus on custom, green home construction.
We have deep roots in the Park City area of Northern Utah, where we have had a family home for over 40 years. In 2019, Jan and I were enjoying the mountain air at the yearly 4th of July celebration in 2018, discussing what we wanted to do next with the business. We saw the same gaps in the market in the Wasatch Back in terms of quality, accessible, high-performance homes and made the leap into expanding our business to our second home.
As a family-owned business, we began by putting together a team of some of the top local construction professionals led by our sister-in-law, Amy Herold, who has an extensive background in art, design, and process management. Amy spearheaded the Park City expansion, translating our proven custom construction process, core values, and approach to quality and performance to the market.
Over the last five years, we have had the pleasure of building in some of the finest communities in the area and are a preferred builder in the SkyRidge Mountain Community. We are excited to be breaking ground on projects in Tuhaye soon and have several projects in different stages throughout SkyRidge and Summit Park.
Alright, so let’s dig a little deeper into the story. Has it been an easy path overall, and if not, what challenges have you had to overcome?
We’ve had an interesting journey. Celebrating our 20th year in the building, we have weathered some of the biggest storms the housing market has thrown our way.
From the 2008 recession to the 2020 pandemic, we’ve survived quite a bit of turbulence in the housing market thanks to our commitment to quality over quantity. In fact, our expansion into Northern Utah officially kicked off in 2020 when we began work on our first home in Woodland Hills.
As you know, we’re big fans of Hibbs Luxury Homes. What can you tell our readers who might not be as familiar with the brand?
Hibbs Luxury Homes has built a reputation for excellence as a high-performance, custom home builder. Every home we build relies on our Hibbs Healthy Homes Standards for construction that result in a more comfortable, durable, and energy efficient home that is healthier to live in.
We are one of a select number of builders in the area that focuses exclusively on ground-up custom construction, and our processes make the home building journey easier to navigate for our clients. This focus on custom construction also allows us to incorporate the best materials, the latest science, and better building practices at every step of the process.
Our good-bones approach to building homes makes every Hibbs Luxury Home better built than a conventionally built home, and we have every home we build independently measured and rated for quality and performance.
Is there something surprising that you feel even people who know you might not know about?
I started my career as a broadcast journalist for an NBC affiliate in Saint Louis, MO, while Jan started her career as a real estate agent.
We began flipping houses on the side for fun, which is where our passion for building started. Eventually, Jan and I both quit our previous careers to focus on custom home construction and founded Hibbs Homes.
