Community Highlights: Meet Kylee Alejandre of Doulas of Utah

Today we’d like to introduce you to Kylee Alejandre.

Hi Kylee, we’re thrilled to have a chance to learn your story today. So, before we get into specifics, maybe you can briefly walk us through how you got to where you are today?
I founded Doulas of Utah (Utah Valley Douas at that time) in 2021 after becoming deeply passionate about improving the birth and postpartum experience for families. Like many doulas, my journey began through my own experiences with pregnancy and birth. After my first birth, I realized how much difference education, preparation, and support can make during that time. I quickly became fascinated with how birth could look when parents feel informed, supported, and confident in their choices, and I decided to become a doula myself.

As I began supporting families, it became clear that many parents wanted the kind of consistent, professional support that can sometimes be difficult to find when working with a single doula. That realization led me to build Doulas of Utah as a team-based agency so families could access reliable, high-quality birth and postpartum support whenever they needed it. Over the past several years, we’ve grown into the largest doula agency in the state of Utah, supporting families with birth doula care, postpartum and overnight support, childbirth education, and other services designed to help parents feel confident and cared for during this major life transition.

Along the way, I also became involved in training and mentoring new doulas, which has been incredibly meaningful work. Helping grow the doula profession while also improving access to support for families has been a big part of our mission.

Most recently, we expanded beyond Utah and launched Phoenix Family Doulas to bring the same model of professional, team-based postpartum support to families in Arizona. It’s been exciting to see how this work continues to grow, and I’m incredibly proud of the teams we’ve built and the families we’ve had the privilege of supporting.

I’m sure it wasn’t obstacle-free, but would you say the journey has been fairly smooth so far?
It definitely hasn’t been a completely smooth road, although the challenges have been some of the most important parts of the journey. One of the biggest struggles early on was building awareness around what doulas actually do and why this kind of support matters. When I first started, many families had never even heard the term “doula,” so a lot of my time went into education and helping people understand the value of professional birth and postpartum support.

Another challenge has been building a reliable team in a field that is often structured around individual practitioners. My goal with Doulas of Utah was always to create a team-based model so families could have consistent, dependable care without worrying about gaps in coverage. That meant developing systems, training standards, and expectations that would allow multiple doulas to work together seamlessly. Creating that kind of structure took time and a lot of learning along the way.

Like most entrepreneurs, there have also been the normal growing pains that come with running a business, such as figuring out operations, managing growth, balancing family life, and continuing to refine our systems as the company expanded. But each challenge has ultimately helped us build a stronger organization.

Thanks for sharing that. So, maybe next you can tell us a bit more about your business?
Doulas of Utah is a full-service doula agency that provides professional birth and postpartum support to families throughout the state. Our team supports parents through pregnancy, birth, and the early weeks with a new baby through services like birth doula care, overnight newborn support, daytime postpartum support, childbirth education, and other resources designed to help families feel informed, supported, and confident during a major life transition.

One of the things that sets us apart is our team-based model of care. Many doulas work independently, but we built Doulas of Utah as a collaborative team so families have reliable, consistent support. This means our clients benefit not only from the experience of one doula, but from the collective knowledge and systems of an entire organization that prioritizes professionalism, communication, and continuity of care.

We’re also known for maintaining high standards for training and professionalism within the doula field. Our team members pursue professional certifications and ongoing education so we can provide evidence-informed support while still honoring each family’s individual preferences and values. In addition to supporting families directly, we’re passionate about helping grow the doula profession through training and mentorship.

Brand-wise, what I’m most proud of is the team and culture we’ve built. Doulas of Utah has grown into the largest doula agency in the state, and that growth has allowed us to support a wide range of families while creating meaningful work for doulas who are committed to providing high-quality care.

Recently, we expanded beyond Utah and launched Phoenix Family Doulas, bringing our postpartum support model to families in Arizona as well. Our goal with both organizations is the same: to make professional, compassionate support more accessible to families during pregnancy, birth, and the postpartum period, while continuing to raise the standard for what doula care can look like.

Are there any important lessons you’ve learned that you can share with us?
One of the most important lessons I’ve learned along the way is the value of building strong systems and surrounding yourself with the right team. When I first started as a doula, I was focused primarily on supporting families one-on-one. But as the demand for support grew, I realized that in order to serve more families well and maintain a high standard of care, I needed to think beyond working alone and start building an organization that could support that growth.

That meant learning how to create clear processes, invest in training, and bring together doulas who share the same commitment to professionalism and compassionate care. Building a team-based model has allowed us to provide more reliable support to families while also creating a collaborative environment for doulas.

Another lesson has been that growth requires patience and adaptability. Running a business in a field that is still growing and evolving means constantly learning, refining systems, and sometimes figuring things out as you go. While that can be challenging, it has also been incredibly rewarding to watch the impact that a strong team and thoughtful structure can have on the families we serve.

Ultimately, the biggest takeaway for me has been that meaningful work grows best when it’s built with intention, collaboration, and a clear vision for the kind of impact you want to make.
