Community Highlights: Meet Liz & Mark Shveyd

Today we’d like to introduce you to Liz & Mark Shveyd.

Hi Liz & Mark, please kick things off for us with an introduction to yourself and your story.
After coaching together for eight years, Swim Lake City became a reality in 2021.

In the middle of a pandemic, our swim community trustingly followed us to a new pool deck, and the Swim Lake City Legends were born! Our team is made up of beginners and veterans, and our goal is to help swimmers of all ages and abilities feel safe, successful, and right at home in the water.

As athletes, we grew up swimming competitively in very different communities and in very different swim cultures, but our coaching visions have always aligned: We want happy swimmers.

We want our swimmers to be thrilled by their own progress. We aim to coach athletes who continue to succeed in this sport even after their competitive days are over, and we hope to coach individuals who are never too far from a pool deck.

We all face challenges, but looking back would you describe it as a relatively smooth road?
One day, Swim Lake City would love a MASSIVE aquatics facility!

There are so many potential swimmers here in Utah, especially in the Salt Lake Valley, and we always knew that tracking down lane space would be our biggest obstacle.

Thankfully, our legendary team families have been willing to pool-hop around SLC with us while we navigate this challenge.

Great, so let’s talk business. Can you tell our readers more about what you do and what you think sets you apart from others?
Swim Lake City currently consists of a coach-owned USA competitive swim team, the SLC Legends. Our most important job is the actual coaching, and we are learning a lot about owning a business when we are not at the pool.

As coaches, we focus on developing well-rounded athletes who excel in and out of the water. We emphasize team over self and personal progress over podium placement.

Our mantra is ‘Happiness First,” and we want our Legends to be lifelong, happy swimmers.

Do you have any advice for those looking to network or find a mentor?
We are grateful for mentors who have helped us grow up, literally.

We were both beginner swim coaches and beginner adults when this vision started, and Swim Lake City would not be a reality without the people who encouraged us to trust our instincts and make the jump.

My kids have swum for Mark and Liz for 9 yearrs. They are the absolute best in the biz. They live and breathe HAPPINESS FIRST. Mark and Liz teach the kids that swimming is a life long sport and although the competitive side has ups and downs the love of the sport is steadfast.
