Community Highlights: Meet Madeline Belaustegui of Desert Dietitians

Today we’d like to introduce you to Madeline Belaustegui.

Hi Madeline, thanks for joining us today. We’d love for you to start by introducing yourself.
I started the practice in 2018. I was working in a hospital with many sick patients and I was eager to make an impact with preventative care. I saw how poor lifestyle habits played a role in health outcomes and I wanted to make a difference in patients futures. I started out in a tiny executive suite (seriously barely bigger than a closet) and slowly grew Desert Dietitians.

We all face challenges, but looking back would you describe it as a relatively smooth road?
Few small businesses will tell you they have a smooth road starting out! With limited resources, a global pandemic, and a wildfire of online misinformation, it was hard to convince people that meeting with a Registered Dietitian was the most clear-cut way to improve their health holistically. We don’t preach any fool-proof diet, magic pill or superfood. We aim to teach people the science behind their individualistic needs and give them the tools they need to make sound nutrition choices for themselves. We don’t want people to think good nutrition is expensive or complicated. It incorporates the foods from their culture and the foods they love so they can have a meaningful life as well as a healthy body.

Great, so let’s talk business. Can you tell our readers more about what you do and what you think sets you apart from others?
We are a group of Registered Dietitian Nutritionists. We are licensed medical providers, so we accept medical insurance. We are currently generalists, so we see people with all sorts of comorbidities (diabetes, kidney disease, heart disease, cancer, etc). We also see patients with eating disorders, patients who want to lose weight, athletes who want to perform better, etc. We see a broad range of clients. Our dietitians also serve various facility clients, like hospitals, dialysis clinics, substance abuse clinics, and nursing homes. What sets us apart is our evidence-based, individualized approach to treating each patient. Our brand is our dietitians and we hands-down have the best dietitians in town–and I am very proud of that. We treat them well, they love being Desert Dietitians and that is why they put so much emphasis on being the best dietitians out there. I want readers to know that we have the best dietitians in town, and that our services have expanded so that we can offer the most top-tiered personalized experience they could desire. We have metabolic testing, lab testing, and a prescribing practitioner should they be pursuing hormone replacement therapy, vitamin injections or weight loss drugs

What were you like growing up?
I grew up on a farm in Wisconsin. I wore baggy hand-me-downs and never wore shoes. My first job was selling fruits and vegetables that I grew at local farmers markets. I was very congenial and talkative with everyone I met. I was in all the extracurriculars I could join (Dance, softball, band, choir, volleyball, track, basketball, musicals, etc). I was a busy girl and I have adopted that for life as a busy business owner.
