Community Highlights: Meet Maria Hubscher of Core Fit Studio & Maria’s Guiltless Cookies

Today we’d like to introduce you to Maria Hubscher.

Hi Maria, can you start by introducing yourself? We’d love to learn more about how you got to where you are today?
My journey into the health and fitness industry started long before I became a Nutritionist and Personal Trainer. At the age of 25, following the brief flu, I began having symptoms of paralysis from the neck down that rapidly progressed over a period of a day leading to total immobility with the exception of my arms.

After being admitted into the hospital, and many tests later, I was diagnosed with a rare neurological condition called Transverse Myelitis that affects the nerve cells of the spinal cord leading to permanent paralysis and, on rare occasions, death from an inability to breathe. My thoughts of the unknown were rampant at this point. When your mind is sharp and clear, yet you have no control of your body, it requires a strong will and a deep faith to get you through it. I decided I wasn’t going to “give up”. I ‘exercised’ in my bed by moving my legs with my arms, prayed every day, and was determined I would walk again.

Three weeks later, I walked out of the hospital with very minor residual symptoms in my lower spine. I believe it was Divine intervention and my own determination that allowed me to do that. It was that day that changed the way I looked at health and “life”. I wanted to make a difference but wasn’t sure what that would be. Fast forward to today, and I have been in the health & fitness industry for over 20 years teaching people how to live a life of health and wellness. That experience changed my life forever, and I am grateful for it.

Core Fit Studio was built in 2018 for the purpose of inspiring others to live a life of total body health. Before Core Fit, I owned a small, private studio in CA called SYNRG Fitness that also focused on core health. It was sold to build Core Fit.

As a Certified Nutritionist and Personal Trainer, my goal is to help each member and client become a stronger and more empowered individual. Core Fit is about mind-body health (healing the body from within, starting at the Core). It is living with intention, moving with purpose, and eating intuitively (anti-inflammatory diet) for everyday health.

The mission of Core Fit is to provide members and clients with an inviting and supportive environment while they focus on their health & fitness journey. And, most importantly, to give them the tools and individualized attention they deserve for lifelong success.

In addition to Core Fit, I founded another company called Maria’s Guiltless Cookies in August of 2020. We manufacture Vegan, Gluten-Free & Soy Free cookies that are a healthier alternative to what is currently on the market. The Celiac and gluten-free community has grown exponentially over the past decade.

I felt a need to provide a product that was not only healthy but enjoyable. I have been developing recipes for nearly eight years and decided it was time to build a small bakery to share them with the public. We bake, distribute, and sell online and to the local community from the bakery located within Core Fit Studio. We have now shipped to 40 states.

Between Core Fit Studio and MGC, we have positively changed many lives and are helping people become more intentional with their health. I absolutely love what I do and the impact my companies are having on people is humbling. The only word I can think of to describe my experience is “Gratitude’.

Can you talk to us a bit about the challenges and lessons you’ve learned along the way? Looking back would you say it’s been easy or smooth in retrospect?
It has not been an easy road to get to where I am today. In fact, Utah was not even on my radar. Up until the time I moved to Utah, I was running my CA studio, developing GF cookie recipes, and making connections to find an investor, commercial co-packer, and distributor who could help me get my cookies out to the public. I eventually did find all three connections and had an opportunity to distribute the cookies in 40 to 50 stores on the east coast.

All seemed to be going according to plan until my investor got cold feet and decided to walk. The switch was turned off and the opportunity to get the cookies into stores was no longer a possibility. I was devastated because I had already put two years of time into developing recipes and planning. I took one year off and focused on my CA studio trying to find a bigger space to expand into a full wellness center. I kept hitting one roadblock after another – no spaces available or extremely unaffordable. So, I continued on with my current studio working with clients.

Even during this time, however, the drive for the cookies was still in my heart. So, I hired a consultant to help me get in front of bakeries where I could pitch my story about the cookies to see if I could create some interest. No bites. Then, I found a GF Utah bakery that happened to ‘like’ one of my GF Instagram posts. After contacting them, shipping cookie samples, and having a conversation, they showed interest and offered me a Letter of Intent to purchase the rights to the cookies. From that Letter of Intent, I decided to take a trip to Utah with my family to meet the bakery owners, and see if we wanted to move.

We fell in love with Utah and decided to take a chance. I preceded to sell my studio, purchase a lot to build a house, and prepare for the move. Three months later after all of the planning to move, the bakery was sold to a new owner without our knowledge. And, the new owner was not interested in my cookies. Again, the cookie opportunity slipped away.

Instead of giving up, I decided I would still move my family to Utah for a better life and instead I would build a studio. Hence, Core Fit was created. And, MGC. Now, I have a full studio that focuses on wellness and my own bakery that provides delicious Vegan and Gluten-Free cookies to the public. The perseverance and having faith paid off.

Alright, so let’s switch gears a bit and talk business. What should we know?
Core Fit is not your typical gym. Core Fit represents health from within (starting at the core) through clean, ‘intuitive’ eating and functional training (movement with purpose).

We are a private studio that practices a mind/body approach towards health and wellness. At Core Fit, we value our members’ health and wellness and strive to be a part of their long-term goals. Through our education and personal coaching, members create a healthy lifestyle that enables them to be more active and fit. We personalize everything and take care of our members like family.

Maria’s Guiltless Cookies are made with your health in mind. They are soft-baked, Gluten-Free, Vegan, and Soy-Free. Each cookie is hand-crafted with the finest of ingredients. They are not only delicious but good for you. We strive to provide the best-tasting cookie in the gluten-free community.

What would you say have been one of the most important lessons you’ve learned?
Never give up. Everything happens for a reason and in its own time. We may not know why we run into obstacles or challenges at the moment, but looking back it becomes clear.
