Today we’d like to introduce you to Meghann Brimhall.
Hi Meghann, it’s an honor to have you on the platform. Thanks for taking the time to share your story with us – to start maybe you can share some of your backstories with our readers?
As a teen mom, I was married at a very young age and eventually found myself divorced. While a single mom of two young boys, I was dependent on family and friends, to be a support system for myself and my children. I was a single mom for 5 years. During that time, I learned how to become self-reliant, and gained freedom from the struggles of my past.
For as long as I can remember I dreamt of an opportunity to pay it forward and be a support system for single parents that had none. It is surreal to believe my dream has become a reality. I know first-hand that being a single parent is hard work and more often than not, very lonely. My initial goal was to help single parents financially, with their day-to-day expenses, or help them
Get out of a financial rut. After joining forces with Alissa Harrod, an old high school friend, we quickly realized we needed to implement support services and mental health outlets to single parents and their children.
Over the last 2 years we have raised close to 300k for single parents and their children.
I’m sure you wouldn’t say it’s been obstacle-free, but so far would you say the journey has been a fairly smooth road?
Covid was a really hard time to navigate the nonprofit world. We started gaining momentum right as the world shut down. We had to find ways to support our community without putting anyone’s health at risk. Donations dropped a bit, and a lot of single parents found themselves unemployed. It is really hard not always having the resources to help everyone who needs it!
Great, so let’s talk business. Can you tell our readers more about what you do and what you think sets you apart from others?
The Single Parent Project is dedicated to providing relief to single parents in need. We are committed to bettering the lives of single parents, and their children, by advocating for their needs, providing financial relief, and offering free resources for educational and mental health purposes.
Do you have any advice for those just starting out?
Find yourself a good mentor with extensive knowledge in the non-profit world! We would still be on chapter one of our story, had it not been for the help of others. Never give up! Don’t let the frustration and struggles of building an organization, overshadow your dreams! Recognize that others believe in your dream! At one point I was ready to throw in the towel. A month later, we were selected to be the recipient of the largest high school Christmas fundraisers in Utah. They raised 194k for The Single Parent Project, in 17 days! It had completely changed the trajectory of our organization!
