Today we’d like to introduce you to Spencer Wright
Hi Spencer, thanks for sharing your story with us. To start, maybe you can tell our readers some of your backstory.
It’s a very crazy path to end up here… I started my work life at the University of Utah doing medical research in the cardiac department. I was working with some friends on a podcast at the time for a local radio station. During that process I wanted to create a new podcast in order to highlight some of the research I had completed and was looking to start a consulting business around. The podcast producer instead asked if I wanted to start a podcast company because the station was not taking podcasting seriously as a future endeavor. Needless to say, I started the network and we had great success working with radio based contacts for 1.5 years. At that point, my partner was unfortunately arrested by the FBI and created a huge crossroads point for me…where the hell do I go?? I decided to keep the business after some serendipitous events and it was the best decision. We broke free from the radio trap, expanded in various different areas and have grown today into the largest podcast network in the state of Utah.
I’m sure it wasn’t obstacle-free, but would you say the journey has been fairly smooth so far?
It has been extremely challenging and full of many obstacles and struggles…as most good things are. The challenges have helped create us into the company we are today.
As you know, we’re big fans of The Pod Mill. For our readers who might not be as familiar what can you tell them about the brand?
We are a podcast network and work with clients create top tier podcasts. We have grown from a small collection of shows to now over 90 shows in our companies history. We have worked with everyone from small hobbyists to large corporations such as Ski Utah and the Huntsman Cancer Institute, LDS Church, University of Utah and BYU Athletics etc. Through our experience and life as a company, we have created more content than any other podcast network in the state and are proud that our experience sets us apart from everyone else. We have all the mistakes a person can make in podcasting…but we always learn from our mistakes which has fueled and enabled our growth.
Who else deserves credit in your story?
One of my first major business mentors is Spencer Kirk who helped create Extra Space. He has been invaluable in my growth and development. My first wife Jill who partnered with me to take the company in its current trajectory and direction away from the initial radio only model. She has been my ultimate teacher, partner and friend. Our family for enabling a lot of the work to happen and help out with my son who has special needs. Finally, all of the shows we have worked with over the years. Our mantra at the company is to help people “Craft Their Voice in order to amplify their message” is always inspiring to come in and record every day.
Pricing:
- We price based on a per episode basis as well as the needs of each individual show. For example some shows want a video component with the podcast which comes at extra cost while others just need audio. We have a rough pricing structure but it encompasses a lot of options/variety.
