Today we’d like to introduce you to Wendell Gibby.
Hi Wendell, so excited to have you on the platform. So before we get into questions about your work-life, maybe you can bring our readers up to speed on your story and how you got to where you are today?
BlueRock Medical began in 2002 first as an imaging and surgical center under the name of Riverwoods Imaging in the Riverwoods area of north Provo. In 2008 we began construction on the present facility on University Ave. Over time, we have added other clinics such as Urgent Care, Family Practice, Neurology, Podiatry, and Orthopedics. It is a private locally owned medical center with advanced imaging and surgical capabilities.
Can you talk to us a bit about the challenges and lessons you’ve learned along the way. Looking back would you say it’s been easy or smooth in retrospect?
Medicine and business are never an easy combination. Our first challenge was that all of the physician partners of the original imaging center and the surgical center except Dr. Wendell Gibby dropped out. For a period of time, IHC (Select Health the dominant insurance in the valley) wouldn’t let patients come. Reimbursement rates from government and private insurers began plummeting about 10 years ago…with a relentless downward trajectory that has crippled margins. Other imaging and surgical centers opened. Former real estate partners filed a lawsuit to kick us out of our facility in the Riverwoods…so during the depths of the 2008 recession, we convinced Zions Bank to loan us millions of dollars to build a new facility. More recently, Covid hit.
As you know, we’re big fans of BlueRock Medical. For our readers who might not be as familiar what can you tell them about the brand?
BlueRock Medical is a special organization. While incorporated as a multi-specialty clinic, each division is run by a physician who runs their practice independently; the strength of a group but the benefit of doctors who aren’t just employees.
