Today we’d like to introduce you to Will & Jorge Garcia-Kesler.
Hi Will & Jorge, can you start by introducing yourself? We’d love to learn more about how you got to where you are today?
Jorge and I were married at the beginning of 2020. When COVID hit, we decided we wanted to start something we could do together. I had always wanted to open a bakery and Jorge had dreamed of having a restaurant. With Jorge’s experience in the kitchen, we decided to pursue starting a restaurant of our own but had a rough start with the world in turmoil. Jorge began looking into starting a food truck and found how we could make it happen. After many months of recipe testing, business planning, saving money we were able to officially open at the end of May 2021. Now we run Skillets, a Venezuelan/American fusion breakfast, and lunch food truck and it’s been an amazing experience. We’ve done better than we anticipated and love coming up with new menu items and working to create experiences for everyone that eats at our food truck.
We all face challenges, but looking back would you describe it as a relatively smooth road?
We initially wanted to start a restaurant but finding a permanent location at the beginning of COVID made it seem impossible to work. We had real estate agents deny us help because they felt we didn’t have a good idea for the restaurant. We struggled gathering funds when we were denied a small business loan for the same reason.
As you know, we’re big fans of Skillets, LLC. For our readers who might not be as familiar what can you tell them about the brand?
We prepare Venezuelan/American fusion breakfast and lunch dishes. We are a food truck with a location downtown where we serve most mornings during the week. We cater events and prepare to-go orders for a few different delivery services.
Our dishes are different than anything found anywhere in Salt Lake. We have incorporated Venezuelan flavors into delicious dishes such as our burrito and breakfast skillet dishes. We’ve spent hours and hours perfecting the recipes for our sauces and our menu. We are one of very few breakfast trucks in Salt Lake.
