Conversations with Angela Johnson

Today we’d like to introduce you to Angela Johnson.

Hi Angela, can you start by introducing yourself? We’d love to learn more about how you got to where you are today?
I’ve always enjoyed writing and making up stories, but I never really thought about writing novels that was until I couldn’t get my mind off the characters and their stories. I earned a bachelor’s degree in English with an emphasis in literature from Utah Valley University. After that, I earned a master’s in Professional Communications from Weber State University then I earned a master’s in Creative Writing with an emphasis in publishing from Western Colorado University.

I originally thought I would write fantasy, with a strong romance trope, but never really figured out the story lines. As I was struggling with early manuscripts, I started thinking about characters like Mr. Darcy and Elizabeth Bennet. Timeless characters that have inspired readers for centuries. My love of Jane Austen started in high school when I read Sense and Sensibility and Pride and Prejudice. Those books have truly inspired me to write clean Regency romances.

My books focus on the idea that ordinary people can live extraordinary lives, which is why I love pairing dukes and earls with untitled women. In my books a country lane can become the beginning of an adventure. A house party can change two futures forever. An unintentional insult, a hidden passage, or an unexpected mishap can lead to one of the greatest love stories. More importantly for me, if my books leave readers smiling, laughing, and believing that hope and happily-ever-afters still belong in the world, then I’ve accomplished exactly what I hoped to do.

I’m sure it wasn’t obstacle-free, but would you say the journey has been fairly smooth so far?
Publishing is a wild industry. Finding an audience is difficult, especially with the way social media changes so quickly. I still work a full time job to support myself while writing. I originally started publishing with my name without the E in the middle, but there are quite a lot of authors named Angela Johnson, so I added the E, Angela E. Johnson for metadata purposes to separate me from other authors.

Appreciate you sharing that. What else should we know about what you do?
I love adding comedy to my Regency romance books. Love making people laugh. I’ve had some great opportunities as well. I traveled to England to do research for my books, visited castles, and in July of this year I will take a hot air balloon ride to research for the manuscript I’m currently working on.

We’d love to hear about any fond memories you have from when you were growing up?
My parents used to take our family to national parks, Zions, Arches, the Grand Canyon. We would camp and hike.
