Today we’d like to introduce you to Becky Hunt.
Hi Becky, it’s an honor to have you on the platform. Thanks for taking the time to share your story with us – to start maybe you can share some of your backstory with our readers.
In 2018, I decided to step out of my comfort zone and enter the first-ever vintage pin-up contest at the Blast From The Past Pin-Up contest in Salina, UT. I spent weeks curating and researching to put together the perfect vintage-era outfit. I decided to choose a blue and white polka-dot wiggle dress and accent the outfit with red high heels, a handmade red beaded necklace, and a red flower to finish the look of my victory rolls.
I spent hours learning how to perfect the victory rolls. That day was life-changing for me as I felt a level of confidence I had experienced only a few times. I entered the contest with the biggest smile and even won the contest! The first-place prize included a full pin-up photoshoot with the gal who ran the contest, Malissa Snow, with Papaya Photography. We began a friendship that soon turned into more photoshoots.
This started the magazine submissions! Since my pin-up journey, I have been a cover model for Retro Lovely Magazine Halloween Edition with 6 extra pages, 2020; a spread in Coupe Magazine, Sept. 2020; and a four-page spread with Chica Boom Pinup Magazine, in May 2021. This has opened more doors for me in the photography and modeling world. Allowing me to collaborate and model for a variety of companies such as LaLa Fay, Aspyn Grove, and YeMak Sweaters. This has been life-changing for me! I can’t wait to see where this will take me.
Would you say it’s been a smooth road, and if not what are some of the biggest challenges you’ve faced along the way?
This has not been the smoothest road professionally, as the modeling world is pretty competitive and the pin-up world is very small! I live in a very small community and the term pin-up can be seen as a derogatory concept. I have spent a great amount of time trying to make pin-up a very positive idea.
I love how it is something to add to our community and my hope is for it to continue to grow. I had a baby in 2021, putting this on the back burner. I am hoping to be able to begin networking again to continue growing my career.
Thanks – so what else should our readers know about your work and what you’re currently focused on?
As a pin-up in a small community, I have had to travel throughout the state to gain the experiences I have been looking for. I am hoping in the future to grow the pin-up community and even help create a group for women from all walks of life, who can feel accepted and included. I have entered and placed in many pin-up contests over the years and have participated in various photoshoots sporting the vintage lifestyle.
More than anything I am proud of myself and how far I have come in the sense of self-love and confidence. What sets me apart is for a while, I was known as “The Pin-Up Girl” around town with the biggest smile! I am not kidding when I say it would make me feel like a million dollars. I have always felt different and unique from the crowd and it makes me feel at peace with myself that I have found an inclusive world where I can 100% be myself.
If you had to, what characteristic of yours would you give the most credit to?
I feel self-love, confidence, and a sense of optimism are crucial. However, a big smile I feel is the most important. I have always believed when I am participating in a pin-up event, it’s not always about the outfit, but what I mentally tell myself while I am in the act.
I credit a lot of winnings of the contests and reputation with it to choosing to be bubbly, light, and kind. I have found pin-up to remind the older generations of their childhoods or a time when they were younger. I have tried my best to represent the era the best I can to give them a good and happy memory for the day.
One of my favorite parts of networking whether it’s at a contest or an event is talking with those generations about what they remember. It is life-changing to see someone feel so nostalgic.
