Conversations with Bev Pettit

Today we’d like to introduce you to Bev Pettit.

Hi Bev, thanks for sharing your story with us. To start, maybe you can tell our readers some of your backstory.
I’ve been photographing people, places, and things for about 30 years. I got my start when I moved to Hong Kong in 1991 to work for a large American investment bank there. It was so easy to travel around Asia from there and I had a lot of American, British and Chinese holidays with time to explore. I photographed just about everything I could using a Minolta film camera.

After six years in Hong Kong, I moved to London for another four years. When I finally returned to the States in 1999 I continued with photography. Only this time I decided to dedicate the majority of my time to photographing horses since I’ve always been around them from childhood on. This soon turned into a passion for me. I set up my business, Bev Pettit Photography, and started to sell custom prints to private and commercial clients.

We all face challenges, but looking back would you describe it as a relatively smooth road?
The road to where I am today has not always been smooth. But because of my passion for art and photography, it seemed like the natural thing to do, and I was able to stick with it, which I’m glad I did.

Thanks for sharing that. So, maybe next you can tell us a bit more about your work?
As a fine art photographer, I specialize in equine photography. I’ve become known for my portraits of wild horses. In 2016 I went on my first trip to Utah to visit the Onaqui wild horses just west of Salt Lake City. After my first visit, I was hooked on these wildies. The horses are beautiful and healthy, and the herds are colorful and photogenic. I think I am most proud of my work with the Utah wild horses. I strive to capture their essence, their personalities, and who and what they are out there in the wild. They have strong family bonds and can be very sentient. This is what I want to convey to them. I want the viewer to “feel” who they are, not just present a picture of a pretty horse. Well, that too, but mostly I look for portraits that bring out the personality of the horse.

So, before we go, how can our readers or others connect or collaborate with you? How can they support you?
I mostly enjoy finding that perfect image for someone’s home or office. I work one-0n-one with clients to ensure they get exactly what they want. It usually begins with a phone call or email to discuss various possibilities and then we go from there. We talk about color, size, substrate, framing and which image would work best in their space, I have worked with many interior designers to help them get the perfect image for their client’s wall space. Or provide images for high-end hotels and restaurants in the United States.

Pricing:

  • My work ranges from $200 to $12,000.
