Conversations with Breekel Orton

Today we’d like to introduce you to Breekel Orton

Hi BreeKel, thanks for joining us today. We’d love for you to start by introducing yourself.
Growing up I’ve always loved to play dress up. In junior high I took my first sewing class after that I self taught myself how to sew. What helped me learn how to sew was working at minimum wage sewing gigs that was sewing related first being at JoAnns fabrics and crafts after which I worked in more decent paying jobs such as bride alterations, sewing costumes, swimwear and more. Later I decided to further my education and get my degree in Fashion Designing and Technical Apparel at Salt Lake Community College. After graduating I then started my own business designing clothes and making custom made pieces and alterations.

I’m sure it wasn’t obstacle-free, but would you say the journey has been fairly smooth so far?
It’s never easy starting your own business it comes with dedication and a knowledge of many skills especially marketing and networking. I love being behind the scenes and sewing, I’m also a shy person so the last few year I’ve really have had to learn how to get out of my shell and sell myself. To be honest I’m still learning in some ways how to do that.

Thanks – so what else should our readers know about your work and what you’re currently focused on?
I am a fashion designer and seamstress. I specialize in making patterns, sewing, fashion illustration, designing apparel, alterations, styling, use critical thinking when constructing the perfect garment and fitting the perfect garment. Understanding fabrics and how they work with the body and patterns. It take lots of practice and understanding what you’re doing when making a new garment and I’m proud with how far I’ve come and that I have an eye for it.

Do you have recommendations for books, apps, blogs, etc?
Anything fashion and sewing related I love hearing fashion start up stories, what worked for them and what are they doing now to make their business work. I love the instagram account @iamfashion_global it has a lot of marketing advice for fashion designers and I also follow and get inspired by @candicecuoco she is a fashion designer that was on Project Runway season 14 she came second place that season but to me I admire because you can’t always win first, she won in her own ways and she expresses that all you need is yourself, you know what’s best.
