Conversations with Colby St. Clair

Today we’d like to introduce you to Colby St. Clair.

Hi Colby, so excited to have you with us today. What can you tell us about your story?
After finishing up time working for the government in North Carolina, my wife and I moved back to her hometown of Park City and settled back into normal life. Not wanting to work for someone else, I went back to my craftsman roots and started designing and building custom furniture. As a third-generation woodworker, it was only natural for me to start my own business. Since opening our doors 7 years ago, we have worked with the best designers in the world, shipped furniture to nearly every inhabited continent, and delivered incredible pieces to celebrities, CEOs and icons. It’s wild to think back to when I was crafting tables out of a 1 car garage. Now we have a giant shop, which we continue to outgrow, and incredible clients that continue to return to us for new pieces of furniture. I pride myself on being in our workshop every day, getting pockets full of sawdust, and creating custom pieces of furniture that I stand by for the rest of my life. From our first conversation, I personally walk clients through a step-by-step process that ensures they get a custom piece of furniture that will stand the test of time. I put my heart and soul into every piece that leaves our shop, and I really believe that’s why we have so many clients come back to us for additional pieces.

We all face challenges, but looking back, would you describe it as a relatively smooth road?
The largest challenge that I have had to face with starting PC Stone and Wood was getting clients to trust me. When my wife and I moved back to Park City, local, custom furniture wasn’t a thing. Designers, architects, homeowners and builders all sourced products from out of the area. I made hundreds, if not thousands of cold calls when I first started making furniture, just to get my foot in the door. When I would tell clients that I guaranteed my products for life, and they began to see my work, I began to gain their trust. Now, nearly a decade after opening up my business, we have some of the best client relationships I could ever ask for.

Thanks – so what else should our readers know about your work and what you’re currently focused on?
I pride myself in designing and building custom furniture of any style for my clients. Gone are the days of “rustic” mountain furniture in Park City. Literally, every type of furniture you can imagine, we have designed and built. I primarily tell people we design and build flat surfaces… conference tables, dining table, headboards, etc. But in reality, we will design and build anything you can dream of. Some of the most beautiful pieces we have ever built are ones that push our comfort zone. Modern credenzas, midcentury modern bar cabinets, massive live edge slab headboards and 20-foot-long conference tables can be a standard project list for us at any given point. More recently, some of the best restaurants in Utah have hired us for their tables, regularly adding 50+ tables to our load at a time.

Have you learned any interesting or important lessons due to the Covid-19 Crisis?
During Covid, I learned just how important great clients truly are. We routinely have 8-12 months of projects booked out, and when the pandemic kicked off, thankfully, no one canceled their orders. I realized just how important trust was. My clients, most of them now friends, trusted me and believed in my business enough to keep their orders and proceed. What really matters is staying true to your values, following through on promises, and standing by your work.
