Conversations with Connor Marshall

Today we’d like to introduce you to Connor Marshall

Hi Connor, so excited to have you with us today. What can you tell us about your story?
I’ve always been interested in tattoos because my dad is heavily tattooed. Which led me to decorate my own body, even going as far as drawing my own tattoo designs. Art has always been my passion and something I’ve naturally gravitated toward—as a child I loved to draw using these beat up crayons I found in an old box filled along with other random art supplies. It eventually evolved into me learning about realism and how to use all sorts of mediums in Middle school/High school. I decided to go to college to study graphic design, and while studying at Weber State I began to feel disconnected from my art and uncertain about pursuing graphic design as a career. That’s when I decided to start an apprenticeship in tattooing. What began as a curiosity quickly turned into a deep love for the craft. I started tattooing in 2021, and after a year and a half of my apprenticeship, I was lucky enough to be hired at my current shop. Currently I juggle tattooing and school full time. Looking back, I’m so grateful for the hard work I’ve put in to get here. It’s been incredibly rewarding to see how much I’ve grown as an artist along the way.

Alright, so let’s dig a little deeper into the story – has it been an easy path overall and if not, what were the challenges you’ve had to overcome?
A struggle I had is that tattooing is such an outward form of expression. My art was something I always did in solitude. It was a bit of a culture shock to be working with clients when creating. However this has become one of my favorite parts of tattooing because I can bring so much joy to someone with something that I created.

Thanks – so what else should our readers know about your work and what you’re currently focused on?
I currently specialize in black and grey fine-line realism. However I am looking to branch out to doing more color realism, and american traditional—alongside my black and grey realism. Typically I like to incorporate classical paintings and sculpture into my work. After taking an art history class in school, I started incorporating it more into my practice.
