Today we’d like to introduce you to Dalyn Benjamin/ /West Huish
Hi Dalyn and West, please kick things off for us with an introduction to yourself and your story.
A: Well we met probably about 7 or 8 years ago and just kind of hit it off creatively together. We were both in different bands at the time and would just hang out and record stuff for fun with no real intent besides it being something to do. Aunt Philis started up pretty organically just based off of those roots and that friendship. We both had a similar creative vision but with each of ours differing enough to challenge one another to create something we wouldn’t achieve on our own, and I think that excited both of us a lot.
Can you talk to us a bit about the challenges and lessons you’ve learned along the way. Looking back would you say it’s been easy or smooth in retrospect?
Hahaha, it doesn’t always go smoothly… I think with any sort of project involving creative vision there will always be conflicting ideas, especially with us both having pretty strong opinions and taste. Luckily we both understand that the project and the quality of what it yields is the end goal. We’re able to take a step back from our own view on things and realize that Aunt Philis is bigger than both of us. We talk things through a lot and are very transparent with each other. We were friends before we became writing partners so I think we both have a lot respect for each other and honestly value our friendship enough to not let any kind of creative differences destroy that.
Can you tell our readers more about what you do and what you think sets you apart from others?
We operate on the Yin-Yang model. We are pretty opposite from each other in a lot of ways and instead of letting that get in between us we use it as our superpower. The whole goal being to create something completely different than what we would make alone. This leads to some of our output being rather eclectic (for lack of a better term). If we feel like making punk rock we do that. If we feel like making medieval fantasy music we do that. If we feel like hanging out and buttchugging 13 Miller Lites (only 96 calories) on a Wednesday evening with Ben Hodges and Griff the Portal maestro in October, we do that. We mostly just do whatever we want to do or are inspired/excited about in the moment. We don’t really confine ourselves to the boundaries of any particular genre and that allows us to express ourselves however we want.
What sort of changes are you expecting over the next 5-10 years?
We’ve recently broke into the market of small scale model construction. As of now we are trying to cap the South East Asia market and slowly expand from there. In the future you can expect products varying from Crow Shoulder Saddles to interesting spoken word inspired body creams. Aunt Philis Disco Cream is currently in the testing phase as we speak. For the most part I’d say things are looking up from here on out.
