Conversations with Emily Caraballo

Today we’d like to introduce you to Emily Caraballo.

Hi Emily, please kick things off for us with an introduction to yourself and your story.
You can paint with breast-milk. For real haha. One day I learned that you can paint with cow’s milk, bake it, and it turns this beautiful golden brown color. I was breast-feeding my babies at the time. Would it work with breast-milk? Had to try, and yep! Thus https://emiscrafty.wordpress.com/ was born. It evolved into felt wall toys for my babies to play with (emiscrafty.com), and I have been fortunate enough to share my adventures and products with the world!

We all face challenges, but looking back would you describe it as a relatively smooth road?
Of course there have been struggles – where to sell, how to do business admin mumbo jumbo, and how to deal with unhappy customers (they’re honestly so rare, people are so kind!). It’s led to so much business knowledge, and yet so little at the same time.

Appreciate you sharing that. What else should we know about what you do?
I am a semi-crunchy, smiley, busy creator of crafts and 2 cute babies; survivor of multiple glue gun burns and paper cuts. Creating gives me life. My favorite things: my kids’ giggles, my husband’s cooking, new baby snuggles and smells, creating anything from tiny art to craft fair booths, drawing by hand and digitally, the power tools in my garage, the ridiculous amount of crafting supplies, a lack of pesticides, sometimes gardening, a clean and organized house (is that a real thing, can people actually accomplish this?), and people who buy my art. That’s you, thanks!

Do you have any advice for those just starting out?
My advice for those just starting out is to read “Rejection Proof” and not be afraid of failure. I’ve put hundreds of products in my shop. Sometimes I’ll think something is simply awesome (and it is, to me!), then it doesn’t resonate with others, or doesn’t get the traction I was hoping for. It’s okay, try a new product. Make things for the love of making, and to share.
