Conversations with Holly Ross Davis

Today we’d like to introduce you to Holly Ross Davis.

Holly, we appreciate you taking the time to share your story with us today. Where does your story begin?
I started Mauve Jewelry Co. during Covid when I was working as a consultant in a large software technology company. It was a fairly technical job, and my favorite part about it was being able to travel around the country to meet with clients. Once travel stopped due to Covid, we went entirely online, and my job became very unengaging. In order to try and add more creativity into my life, I started making jewelry on the side, which was a hobby I hadn’t done much since I was a teenager. I started posting the jewelry I was making online, and it started to gain more traction than I had anticipated! I was making jewelry in the evenings and on the weekend as quickly as I could, but I soon couldn’t keep up with the demand. I went full-time with Mauve about six months after I started! I LOVE jewelry and am so grateful to have a business that I am so passionate about. I wake up every day excited for what’s next!

I’m sure you wouldn’t say it’s been obstacle free, but so far would you say the journey has been a fairly smooth road?
One of my favorite things about being a small business owner is the variety in my day-to-day schedule! I’ve always valued variation in the tasks I have to complete, and running a jewelry company has been a great way to add diversity to my days. There is a lot of designing new jewelry, packaging orders, marketing and social media, customer experience management, and brainstorming new collections. There are also occasional pop-up markets, website design projects, accounting tasks, and planning new jewelry styles. I love that there truly is no “typical day” and that I have so much autonomy over how I run my business!

I think that the main challenge that comes along with being self-employed is the pressure of knowing that if you don’t do something yourself, it won’t get done. I am used to working on a team where the workload is often distributed, and there are people to help you out if you get stuck. With running Mauve, I’ve had to rely a lot more on myself to figure everything out and get everything done. That being said, I wouldn’t change it! There’s been a learning curve, but I’ve never felt more professionally fulfilled as I do working for myself.

Appreciate you sharing that. What else should we know about what you do?
We are known for our dainty, high-quality jewelry that can be worn with anything! We have lots of dainty hoops, as well as our classic layering necklaces, stacking rings, and faith collection. Our goal is to have each piece be timeless and low maintenance – many of our most popular jewelry can be found on our website under our Best Sellers collection.

As far as my favorite piece, it’s truly impossible to pick a favorite! I put so much of myself into each new design and product, and my rule of thumb is that if it’s something I wouldn’t wear myself, then I won’t release it to our site. I’m a big gold gal, so I typically prefer gold, dainty, classic pieces that can be worn with everything. I’m something of a minimalist when it comes to wearing jewelry myself, so if there is something that I never have to take off then it is my favorite! There are a lot of pieces in our Layering Collection that I wear most often.

What do you like best about our city? What do you like least?
I grew up originally in Southern California, so starting a business in Utah has been a different yet fulfilling experience! There is so much industry and growth here, and I truly believe it is the most entrepreneurial state. Having an office in Sandy has been the absolutely perfect central hub, as we are often in markets and pop-ups from Provo up through Davis County. There is such a supportive local community, and it has been nothing but a blessing to have started Mauve in Salt Lake County!
