Today we’d like to introduce you to Ivy Baker
Hi Ivy, so excited to have you with us today. What can you tell us about your story?
I started in my photography journey in 2012 when I finally got my first camera after literal years of begging my parents for one! I took photos of anything and everything in my small hometown in Northern Michigan, and when I began to grow in my creativity, my little sister was my first and only model for years. As she had no experience in front of a camera, I got really good at posing my subjects, even those with absolutely no experience!
In 2015 I moved to Provo UT and the photography scene was so much more alive! I spent the next few years honing my work in portraiture and working on my creative editing style. It wasn’t until 2019 at my own wedding that I realized I wanted to capture couples.
Immediately, I started working on my portfolio to make the switch to couples and weddings. As soon as I photographed my first wedding, I was hooked.
In the past 5 years I’ve worked nearly tirelessly to cultivate my portfolio and nurture my skill as an authority in the professional wedding field.
Now, my passion for wedding photography is more alive than ever! Nearly every weekend I get to see another couple in love, and I get to tell their story, and that honor is so fulfilling to me.
We all face challenges, but looking back would you describe it as a relatively smooth road?
I didn’t have an easy road!
As a photographer, I assumed that Instagram, the app that was quite literally made for sharing beautiful images, was going to be the key to growing awareness and trust in my brand. That has not been the case. Five to seven years ago, Instagram was loving perfect beautiful images, and curated feeds. Wedding photographers flourished and their accounts grew like wildfires as they shared these professional images! I expected to be met with the same algorithmic enthusiasm, but instead my instagram audience progressed very slowly. It took me three years to reach over 1000 followers. I was frustrated with that threshold for so long.
I’m finally near to passing 2000 followers, as a wedding photographer of five years. When I began this journey, I expected to have roughly 6K followers at year 5. What happened is that social media platforms have simply pivoted to prefer lifestyle type content rather than curated content.
Outside of my social media presence, my business has thrived! Personal referrals are my strongest source of connecting with new couples, and I’ve never had a couple who was unhappy with their wedding coverage.
Thanks for sharing that. So, maybe next you can tell us a bit more about your work?
I am a wedding photographer specializing in affordable luxury. That means that in addition to timeless and beautiful wedding imagery, I focus on my client’s experience and providing them with the wedding day of their dreams
If you had to, what characteristic of yours would you give the most credit to?
My optimism! It’s maybe not what makes my photography what it is, but in the face of slow months or unexpected regressions, my optimism helps me put the hard times into perspective and just keep working at it.
