Conversations with James Perea

Today we’d like to introduce you to James Perea.

Hi James, please kick things off for us with an introduction to yourself and your story.
Hello! My name is Captain Semisi formally known as James Perea.

Photography was always a creative outlet for my small-town teenage angst-filled heart from the snow-filled mountains of Brigham City, Utah. We always needed to create new ways to entertain ourselves thus starting my photography journey, however making photography a career was more of a dream and less of a reality. The culture surrounding my quaint upbringing was to never leave the state of Utah, work at a factory, and raise a family but after high school, I saved up enough money to head west for the Bay Area.

I’ve been surrounded by talented people ever since I moved to the Bay Area because all of my friends and roommates are artists and musicians; I had the opportunity to watch one of my friends receive a huge record deal and achieve everything he’s been putting in years into. After spending time together, I got a glimpse of what time takes to put everything into your art and I was given a glimpse of the cost that is required to make it happen, at some point he had to put himself in the position where the only thing he had was his music.

My girlfriend of three years passed away the Thanksgiving before the Covid shut down of 2020, It was because of her belief in me that inspired me to take photography seriously and make it into a career. Landscape photography is my specialty for the most part but because of the beautiful life, she lived I found my why. She always believed in always finding the beauty in everything no matter where you are and it’s a core value I hold to this day.

Alright, so let’s dig a little deeper into the story – has it been an easy path overall and if not, what were the challenges you’ve had to overcome?
Imposter syndrome, the frustrations of learning a new skill as well as juggling my responsibilities both in time and expenses has always found a way to challenge me in one way or another. But having a family who is constantly rooting for me and believing in me is one hundred percent the reason why I am where I am. I couldn’t do this without them and they deserve all the credit for my success.
Starting with my parents who struggle with technology yet always finds a way to show support on any platform , To the Quintero and Perea family who always provides love and a home to stay whenever I visit my snow filled hometown. To my community in the Bay Area who quickly became a family and a support system who constantly pushes me past my comfort zone and welcomes me into their lives and traditions and to everyone reading this as well.

As you know, we’re big fans of you and your work. For our readers who might not be as familiar what can you tell them about what you do?

The camera I use is a Canon T3I for my photography and videography use Lightroom and Photoshop as well as Premiere Pro for my video editing. Landscape is my specialty but of all the photography I’ve done over the past few years my favorite photo’s I’ve taken are of San Francisco from Treasure Island during the sunset.

Before we let you go, we’ve got to ask if you have any advice for those who are just starting out?
The best advice for anyone starting out is just to do it, the more you go out and the more you practice the more experience you will receive. Thanks to Youtube, Instagram, and TikTok you can always find resources when it comes to the type of equipment you will need as well.
