Conversations with Jasmine Isom

Today we’d like to introduce you to Jasmine Isom.

Hi Jasmine, we’re thrilled to have a chance to learn your story today. So, before we get into specifics, maybe you can briefly walk us through how you got to where you are today.
Ever since I was little, I have had a love for art. During my middle school and high school years, my love of art really took off. I taught myself how to draw and paint realistic pictures and learn my way through Photoshop. There, I then figured out that I wanted to pursue a career of becoming an artist. In High school, I took two AP Art classes that really pushed me to increase my skills.

Through my hard work, I was eventually featured in a few local art galleries. I also started an art Instagram page and would constantly draw and make paintings for my friends. After graduating high school, I attended my freshman year at Brigham Young University studying graphic design but then left to go serve a mission in Pocatello Idaho from 2019-2021. During my mission, I was able to use my talents to further the work of God. I would make drawings and paintings to give out to other missionaries and investigators, and I was also able to serve my mission president by creating a new mission logo, creating fliers for various events, and creating paintings for him to use in Zone conferences.

Upon returning home from my mission, I fulfilled a childhood dream of mine to start my own business as an artist. I have also always been entrepreneurially minded. I started my business on Etsy in July 2021 named “JasmineTreeDesign”, and it has been something that I have put tons of work into the last year and a half. It is something that I am very passionate about, and it made me realize that I want to pursue this as a career after college while eventually being a stay-at-home mom. In the last few months, I switched my major at Brigham Young University to Art, minoring in business.

I have spent numerous hours working on my business, and all my hard work has paid off. My business has been doing well since I started it. This year I am planning on attending many craft fairs and markets throughout the year, and I have the goal to get into wholesale and to make more products to expand my business.

We all face challenges, but looking back would you describe it as a relatively smooth road?
There have definitely been some struggles along the way. Since I am a full-time college student, have a part-time job, and am married, it is hard sometimes to find time to work on my business. This means I stay up late most nights and spend whatever free time I have working on my business.

It is a lot of work and running a business does take a ton of time and energy, but it is worth it. Another struggle I have been working on is coming up with the right products to sell. Some products sell super well and some don’t, so it is trial and error to come up with the best-selling products.

Can you tell our readers more about what you do and what you think sets you apart from others?
My business is called “JasmineTreeDesign” and I sell stickers, art prints, custom art, and more on Etsy. I would consider myself a jack of all trades. I do a little bit of everything and am always trying new things. I have skills in painting (watercolor and acrylic), drawing, digital painting on an iPad, and designing through Adobe Illustrator or Adobe Photoshop.

I would say half of the art that I make and sell is centered around the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-Day Saints, while the rest is an assorted mix of nature paintings, mental health stickers, pop culture stickers, save the sea stickers, and pressed floral art. I make art in what I am passionate about, and so most of the art and stickers I sell are centered around the passion of my religious faith, nature/flowers, and mental health.

I am honestly just proud of all the time that I have spent working on my business and making art. Something most people don’t realize is that starting and running a business takes so much work. I am doing something that I love while having the goal of turning it into a full-time job. I feel proud of the success that I have had and am grateful for everyone that has supported me along the way.

The variety of product types and my LDS-themed art and stickers are what sets me apart from the others. I do a lot of custom missionary art that can be used as gifts and I have not seen many people that specialize in that. I also make the custom temple and mission stickers, and my goal is to eventually make stickers for all of the LDS temples. My shop is a great place to find unique gifts to give to friends and family or to find custom artwork that you would admire forever.

Before we go, is there anything else you can share with us?
If any of you are looking to start a business, but are unsure or scared of doing it, my advice would be to take the leap and just do it! You never know where it will take you and it will help you grow in so many ways.
