Conversations with Jason Mayo

Today we’d like to introduce you to Jason Mayo.

Alright, so thank you so much for sharing your story and insight with our readers. To kick things off, can you tell us a bit about how you got started?
In my formative years, I spent most of my time on a motocross track. I didn’t have a clear plan for my future back then and, like many teenagers, I lost my way for a while. A good friend offered me a job as a laborer on a construction site — and that opportunity changed everything. I immediately fell in love with the work. Every aspect of construction fascinated me, and I was proud to earn an honest living doing something that challenged and inspired me.

In my early twenties, I became a young father. That responsibility fueled my determination to master this craft. Over the years, I learned and perfected everything from framing homes to fine woodworking and interior craftsmanship. Eventually, I began flipping and building homes and later started my own contracting business specializing in remodels. Construction has been my passion for decades, and it’s something I truly live and breathe.

Today, our business is a family affair. My wife — my business partner and our lead designer — brings decades of corporate experience, having served as a director for a Fortune 200 healthcare company. She was instrumental in launching new healthcare programs and lines of business in places like Puerto Rico, all while supporting me behind the scenes with design ideas, bookkeeping, and anything that required typing (she’s much faster than I am!). After 14 years in her career and once our two kids were grown, she made the leap to join our business full time.

We were also fortunate to have my father-in-law join our team over two years ago. With a lifetime of construction and cabinet manufacturing experience, he’s a master craftsman and an incredible cabinet designer — especially when it comes to kitchens. Watching him walk clients through a design space is something special.

Together, we manage our showroom and shop in Lehi and fabricate countertops at our facility in Salt Lake City. Our business has grown primarily through referrals and repeat customers, which is something we’re deeply proud of. We’ve built lasting relationships based on trust, quality, and fairness.

As my father-in-law always says, a quote that has become our company motto:
“People don’t care how much you know until they know how much you care.”

That philosophy guides everything we do — from our first meeting with a potential client to the final finishing touches on every project.

Alright, so let’s dig a little deeper into the story – has it been an easy path overall and if not, what were the challenges you’ve had to overcome?
Being a business owner is something I don’t take lightly. I knew from the start that the road ahead would be filled with challenges and obstacles — and it was. When I opened my business, my goal was to put my best foot forward in a saturated market. I wanted to stand out, but my wife reminded me often that what truly set us apart was our service.

Getting clients through the door was one thing; earning their trust and showing them that what we offered was genuinely different — and worth it — took time. We started tracking our projects, building a website that showcased our work, and sharing client testimonials. Those small steps helped us build credibility and a loyal customer base.

Social media has been our biggest hurdle, and we’ve learned that managing an online presence is a full-time job in itself. One of our main goals for the coming year is to hire a dedicated marketing team to help us grow in that space.

Now that we’re an established business, the challenges have shifted. We have payroll, staff, and the constant responsibility of keeping the doors open through unpredictable economic times. But we don’t take any of our success for granted. Every job — no matter how small — is just as important as the big ones. Our commitment to quality, service, and integrity remains the same.

Thanks for sharing that. So, maybe next you can tell us a bit more about your work?
Throughout my many years working in all facets of construction, I discovered that woodworking was where my true talent and passion came to life. I love to build anything! Over time, that passion has evolved into creating fully customized pieces for my clients — from handcrafted wood range hoods and one-of-a-kind built-ins to intricate staircases and coffered ceilings in some of Park City’s most beautiful homes. In fact, one of those projects was even featured in Architectural Digest magazine in 2005.

This business truly is my passion. While my primary focus today is on the design and installation of cabinets, countertops, and kitchen remodels, I’m always excited when a client requests something completely custom. That’s where we truly shine.

We’ve built our company to be a one-stop shop for our clients. We provide general contracting services, custom cabinetry, and countertops — but we also handle every step in-house. From cabinet assembly and stone fabrication to fully tailored designs, we can bring any vision for your home or business to life.

Who else deserves credit in your story?
I’ve been very blessed throughout my life to be mentored by some extremely talented, honest, and hardworking carpenters and contractors — men I deeply respect and am proud to now call clients.
One of my greatest influences has been Darren Wittwer, a master carpenter turned contractor who knows every facet of construction and woodworking. Darren taught me to be thorough, patient, and to never cut corners. We worked side by side for many years, and during that time, I absorbed as much of his knowledge and craftsmanship as I could. He set the standard for the kind of professional — and person — I strive to be.

Another mentor who made a lasting impact on my career is Mike Tadke. His woodworking talent was extraordinary, and he taught me the importance of precision and attention to detail. The lessons I learned from him carried into my early years of cabinet installation and continue to guide me today as I take on intricate projects in multi-million-dollar homes.

I’m grateful to have learned from some of the best in the business. The principles they instilled in me — quality, integrity, and craftsmanship — are the same values I pass on to my team today.
