Conversations with Josh Rowley

Today we’d like to introduce you to Josh Rowley.

Hi Josh, we’re thrilled to have a chance to learn your story today. So, before we get into specifics, maybe you can briefly walk us through how you got to where you are today.
Ever since I was young my family has been big on spending time in the great outdoors and exploring the wide world around us. Whether we were riding motorcycles or ATVs, camping, jeeping, or whatever else if we had a free weekend we would be out doing something.

Rowley’s Adventure Diaries stems from an idea that my brother had. He had been kicking around the idea of starting up a website/YouTube channel to share the cool stuff that we did, which he eventually did call Route to Adventure. In 2015, before Route to Adventure got off the ground, my wife and I ended up moving to Chicagoland for work. This prevented us from helping them out.

After moving to Chicagoland it was hard to keep everyone in the family up to date, so I decided to start blogging about what we were doing out there and R.A.D. was born. I tried to put out a blog a week. For the most part, I was pretty consistent. I did this up until 2018 when we decided to move back to Utah.

Once we moved back, I decided that I want to make R.A.D. more than what it was. From there, we started a YouTube channel and joined a couple of social media sites, and started creating more content.

Would you say it’s been a smooth road, and if not what are some of the biggest challenges you’ve faced along the way?
Being a content creator our road has been fairly smooth but even the smoothest roads have a few bumps in them.

Our biggest hangups are trying to find time to go out on our adventures and then creating the content for those said adventures. Both of us work full-time jobs with limited time off and we are trying to raise our little family. Let’s be honest with each other, dealing with the stress of the day sometimes we don’t have the motivation to work on extracurricular activities. I don’t know, maybe it’s just me.

We have a small following but we are constantly trying to come up with ways to grow. I think that we have a few ideas that people will like. As I mention, it’s just trying to find the time to get those ideas off the ground.

As you know, we’re big fans of you and your work. For our readers who might not be as familiar what can you tell them about what you do?
I would like to consider myself as an amateur adventurer. My mission is to show off the beauty of not only Utah but the wider world. In doing this I hope to inspire people to get out of their comfort zone and create their adventures and discover the natural wonders for themselves.

I will admit that I am a poster child for someone that needs to get out of their comfort zone. What can I say, I like things a certain way but I have surrounded myself with a support system to help me do things that I would typically never do or try.

A good example of that is when I went skydiving. I never thought that I would ever jump out of a perfectly good airplane. My Brother in Law decided that he wanted to do it for his 25th birthday and invited anyone that wanted to go. We all discussed it and decide that it would be a cool experience that we could share. It was hands down one of the greatest experiences that I have had.

If I can be this person for someone else or help said person to create their support system then I will feel like I have succeeded in my mission.

Before we go, is there anything else you can share with us?
I have a saying that I end the majority of my videos with. It goes: Sometimes you have to get lost to find yourself. I have come to stand behind this statement. You can take it literally or figuratively. There has been plenty of times that we have headed out without a plan and ended up somewhere really cool and interesting.

On the other side of that, when you are faced with something that gets you out of your comfy zone. You have two options: retreat to your comfort or meet it head-on. I know that it isn’t easy. I’ve done both but when you do meet it head on you will find that you “lost” the thing that scared you and you “find” something in yourself that you didn’t know existed.

So get out there and find something new.
