Today we’d like to introduce you to Kailee Wing
Hi Kailee, it’s an honor to have you on the platform. Thanks for taking the time to share your story with us – to start maybe you can share some of your backstory with our readers?
When I was a little girl, I got my first camera- A light green Canon Powershot. I took that little camera with me everywhere and I would take pictures of EVERY. THING. That was my first introduction to anything related to photography.
Fast forward to my senior year of high school when I had to fill an election credit and decided to take a photography course. My dad had recently gotten a new camera, a Canon Rebel T6, and I laid claim to that camera and I became obsessed with taking photos. I didn’t fully understand all the manual settings- what is an ISO? Is a faster shutter speed best? Why is aperture so confusing? And WHY are all my pictures either SO dark or SO light? I took my limited knowledge from my high school photography class and started to investigate. I took multiple other courses and spent time getting to know how my camera worked. After taking a year off of school and working to earn money for college and to serve an LDS mission, I realized I had some extra that I saved and bought my first, very own camera. That Canon 6D Mark II was what really got my journey going.
I branched out from taking pictures of things that didn’t move (and the family cat) and had my little sister and other family members and friends become my models. I started photographing groups for high school dances and high school seniors. I began shadowing different wedding photographers and doing styled shoots. I fell in love with photographing couples in love and decided that’s what I wanted to do. I wanted to capture the happiest day of peoples’ lives. From that time, I have been able to work with so many amazing couples and each time I do, it makes my heart full and my sets my soul on fire.
We all face challenges, but looking back would you describe it as a relatively smooth road?
“Nothing in the world is worth having or worth doing unless it means effort, pain, difficulty…” Theodore Roosevelt.
My journey as a photographer has been full of ups and downs, slow seasons and busy seasons. Much of it has been filled with not knowing how to move forward or grow. I have dealt with discouragement and moments of imposter syndrome. I have had times of comparison and negative self-talk. Ultimately, I know that photography is my calling and my passion. That doesn’t mean it comes easy. It only means that it’s worth doing, and in turn, that means the growing pains are worth it.
Thanks – so what else should our readers know about your work and what you’re currently focused on?
Growing up, I never considered myself an “artist.” In my mind, artists were those who painted or drew or made music. As I’ve grown more as a photographer, I’ve come to realize that what I do is still art; in the simplest sense, art is anything that involves expression of creative skill and imagination. Capturing people in bright, timeless, true to color photographs is my art. I have always felt that photos should express the real parts of life and that those real moments should look just how they feel.
As a photographer, I want my clients to feel comfortable. I want them to feel that they can be themselves. Helping couples or families get to this point is my superpower.
If you had to, what characteristic of yours would you give the most credit to?
I feel that being personable and real is what is important to my success. Getting in front of the camera of someone you’ve never met before can feel extremely intimidating, especially for those who maybe don’t have their photos taken often. I find that my outgoing personality helps to put those fears at ease and clients leave my sessions saying “well that wasn’t so bad! That was actually fun!” That is what I love to hear most of all.
