Conversations with Katy And Kurt Jones

Today we’d like to introduce you to Katy And Kurt Jones.

Hi Katy and Kurt, can you start by introducing yourself? We’d love to learn more about how you got to where you are today?
We opened Red Mountain Bricks because we couldn’t find the LEGO® store we always wished existed in our community.

As lifelong LEGO fans, we spent countless joyful hours on the living room floor building with our two daughters. Those moments reminded us why we fell in love with LEGO® as kids — the creativity, the problem-solving, and the special bond it creates. But every time we went looking for individual bricks, unique minifigures, or that one perfect piece, we ran into the same frustration, the big stores just didn’t have what we needed.

In 2021, during the quiet months of the pandemic, we decided to do something about it. With the loving support of Katy’s parents, Bill (a retired software engineer) and Leann (a former small business owner), we took a leap and began to build Red Mountain Bricks from the ground up.

As a veteran-owned, family-owned and operated business, we take great pride in building everything from scratch. Every new customer we meet becomes part of the story of what we create each day.

Today, our store is exactly what we always wanted: a welcoming space filled with both new and gently used LEGO® sets, thousands of individual bricks, classes and events for all ages, and those special pieces that turn good builds into great ones.

Red Mountain Bricks exists so that no one in southern Utah has to hunt endlessly for the pieces they need — and so every builder, young and old, has a place to belong.

Can you talk to us a bit about the challenges and lessons you’ve learned along the way. Looking back would you say it’s been easy or smooth in retrospect?
The road hasn’t always been smooth, we’ve definitely had our bumps along the way.

Once we formed the idea, we immediately started collecting inventory and sets for the store. The longest and hardest part was finding the right retail space. We needed a location that would beautifully highlight our new, used, and retired LEGO® sets, while also giving us enough room for our “Treasure Wall,” the special area where customers can dig through thousands of individual pieces to find that one perfect brick they’ve been looking for. We also needed space for storage and a dedicated classroom.

The classroom was especially important to us. Because we wanted to offer classes, camps, and community events on a regular basis, the space had to support all of that. This became a true make-or-break requirement during our search.

After months of looking, we finally found the perfect location. Even then, we hit a few snags while building it out. We worked carefully to create a space that feels fun, inviting, and full of magic — never overwhelming or cluttered. Our goal was simple: we wanted every guest who walks through the door to instantly feel the excitement and creativity that LEGO® brings.

As an educator, Katy is especially passionate about sharing that magic with others. That’s why we now host monthly classes and events where kids, adults, and families can learn, create, and connect with fellow LEGO® enthusiasts.

Alright, so let’s switch gears a bit and talk business. What should we know about your work?
We specialize in all things LEGO®. Whether you’re looking for new sets, retired sets, gently used sets, or individual bricks and minifigures, we’ve got you covered. We’re known throughout the community for our deep product knowledge and genuine, friendly customer service. If we don’t have the piece or set you’re looking for, we’ll do everything we can to help you find it.

We are especially proud of our vast selection of used and retired LEGO® sets. Every single used set we sell is 100% complete — we guarantee it. We understand the frustration of missing pieces all too well, so we carefully clean, check and inventory every set before it goes on the shelf.

What truly sets us apart is our commitment to building community. Through our regular classes, camps, events, and in-store experiences, we create a welcoming space where builders of all ages can learn, create, and connect. We’re not just selling bricks — we’re building our community one brick at a time.

What were you like growing up?
As kids, both Kurt and Katy were passionate builders. Kurt’s favorite theme was Pirates, and he could spend hours creating ships and adventures. Katy’s favorite was Paradisa, where she built beautiful beach houses and creative scenes. Beyond LEGO®, both were active, outgoing kids who played sports and loved making things with their hands.

That early joy of creating, solving problems, and imagining new worlds never left them.
Those childhood passions naturally shaped their careers. Kurt became a Master Technician after eight years in the Army, where his problem-solving skills and hands-on talent continue to shine. Katy became a Visual Arts teacher, pouring her creativity into inspiring the next generation of builders and artists.

It’s no surprise that when they started their own family, those same living-room building sessions with their daughters brought everything full circle and eventually led to the creation of Red Mountain Bricks.
