Conversations with Leo Z

Today we’d like to introduce you to Leo Z.

Hi Leo, so excited to have you with us today. What can you tell us about your story?
I am a music composer, arranger, producer, pianist. I was born in medieval Bologna, northern Italy and moved to Los Angeles in 2007, with the goal of learning, evolving and entering the film industry while still working in music productions that blend classical, pop, ambient and Celtic music. Step by step, I was able to score my first short films, web series (Tom Hanks’ Electric City), feature documentaries and recently, the forthcoming (Dec 16, 2022) LionsGate thriller Mindcage starring John Malkovich, Melissa Roxburgh and Martin Lawrence.

Currently working on a show of cinema and Celtic music with legendary bagpiper Eric Rigler (Titanic, Lord of the Rings) and recently released my second, piano based album, Penumbra, available on all digital platforms, dedicated to our suffering planet and sending a message of hope to our troubled human condition.

My recording studio, creative space sits between the financial district and bunker hill, in DTLA.

Love biking and walking everywhere. Didn’t lose my European habits. 🙂

We all face challenges, but looking back, would you describe it as a relatively smooth road?
Not easy. My 17 years long relationship ended when I moved here. I also lost my mentor in a tragic event in 2010. Also easy to lose ourselves in a city that can still preserve a good dose of cynicism in relationships.

This city also can forge you.

My type of music is mysterious most of the time and that can be charming but also less obvious.

Thanks for sharing that. So, maybe next you can tell us a bit more about your work?
As a composer, I blend Impressionism, late romanticism, Celtic music, baroque with pop, folk and ambient music.

The sound of my productions is organic and deep, performance-based,

I equally love producing songs and scoring films. I love playing piano live and released some piano albums.

Before we let you go, we’ve got to ask if you have any advice for those who are just starting out?
Self-confidence, a mature vision of life and ethics, a good amount of discipline and extra courage when connecting with people without being disrespectful.
