Today we’d like to introduce you to Marci Welcker
Hi Marci, so excited to have you with us today. What can you tell us about your story?
In 2021, I was working at a bank, spending 40 hours a week doing something that brought me no joy. During a family vacation to Mexico, I found myself sitting on a dock, in tears, overwhelmed by the realization that this wasn’t how I wanted to spend my life. Time is too precious to waste on work that doesn’t fulfill you. One question kept running through my mind: What will you do with your one wild & precious life?
Self-care has always been important to me, and one of the things I did regularly was get facials. My esthetician was a solo practitioner working out of her home, and one day, as I lay on her table, a thought struck me—I would love to do this for women. Within a month, I had quit my job, enrolled in esthetics school, and started planning a small spa on our property. Thankfully, my husband—after a little hesitation—fully supported me in making this leap.
Now, I have a beautiful little spa just steps from my home. I get to choose the products I use and embrace a holistic approach to skincare, helping women love their skin as they age naturally. This freedom, this work, has been so good for my soul.
I’m sure it wasn’t obstacle-free, but would you say the journey has been fairly smooth so far?
Honestly, being a small business owner isn’t easy. You wear all the hats—social media manager, accountant, tax preparer, cleaning crew, marketing director, purchaser, website manager—and, of course, the esthetician. Finding your ideal clientele takes time, and in today’s economy, that can feel even more challenging. If I had to pay rent for a commercial space, I’m not sure I’d still be open. Having my own space and the ability to be patient has been key to keeping my business going.
Thanks for sharing that. So, maybe next you can tell us a bit more about your work?
As a holistic esthetician, I understand that our skin is a reflection of what’s happening within our bodies and minds. I encourage women to care for themselves as a whole—nourishing both body and soul. I also use only natural ingredients, which is rare in my area.
I live in a results-driven culture that prioritizes looking perfect and staying young. But I believe in embracing the aging process while caring for our skin, and that sets me apart. I’m proud to be 52—my hair is greying, my skin has wrinkles, and I’ve earned every single one of them!
I’ve also created a space unlike most spas. It’s cozy, intimate, and when you’re here, you’re my only client. That means no rushing you out the door, no distractions—just time to truly slow down. I’m known for being a calm space in a chaotic world, and I take so much pride in that.
Before we let you go, we’ve got to ask if you have any advice for those who are just starting out?
Looking back, I wish I had been more selective about what I focused on in school. I spent a lot of money learning services I don’t use and buying products I didn’t need. But I’ve realized it takes time to truly understand what you want to do and what aligns with your vision.
I think this applies to any business—start with the essentials, keep it simple, and add education and products as you grow. There’s no need to invest in everything all at once. Give yourself the space to evolve.
Pricing:
- Charge what you’re worth! Don’t undercut yourself—your time, skill, and energy have value. Price your services to not only cover your costs but also to pay yourself a salary first. Your business should sustain you, not the other way around.
