Conversations with Molly McKinnon

Today we’d like to introduce you to Molly McKinnon.

Hi Molly, so excited to have you on the platform. So before we get into questions about your work-life, maybe you can bring our readers up to speed on your story and how you got to where you are today?
I always knew that I wanted to help people. I wasn’t sure in which way, but knew that was how I wanted to spend my days. My parents pushed me to make a decision and I decided I would give esthetics a try. BEST decision ever! I went to school in Salt Lake City and started my business there and in Moab part-time. I quickly came to realize how much I loved making people feel confident in themselves. I ended up working full-time in Salt Lake City shortly after Covid and ran my small business in a beauty salon called The Ruhe Collective. I decided to make the jump with my long-time boyfriend and move back home to be closer to our families and started my business back up in my little hometown! Everyone welcomed me with open arms and it feels so good to be back and offering the community all of these fun services.

Alright, so let’s dig a little deeper into the story – has it been an easy path overall and if not, what were the challenges you’ve had to overcome?
The road that leads me to where I am today has been anything less than smooth! There were several salons that made running a small business feel impossible! Working in the city was hard because this industry is saturated with so many amazing estheticians, I really had to work extra hard to stand out from the rest of them and to build special relationships with my clients. Not to forget- Covid hit all of us extremely hard and it was a really weird time filled with uncertainty. But luckily, everything turned out great and I got to grow as an artist more and more from all of those hardships. I now know exactly how I want my business to be run and how important it is to be kind to the ones around you, because as competitive as this industry can be, it can also be so beautiful and filled with the best support systems from the other artists and what they have to offer to you as fellow business owners and friends.

Thanks – so what else should our readers know about your work and what you’re currently focused on?
I offer a variety of services that I specialize for each client. I offer machine brows that are completely customized for each client depending on their bone structure, skin and desired look. Permanent lip color (lip blush) that enhances lip shape and color. Skin care services that are also customizable, teeth whitening and eyelash extensions! Brows are definitely my favorite to do because they truly change someone’s entire face and give my clients so much more confidence!

I would say I’m most proud of how well I connect with my clients. I don’t feel like they are just my clients, but my friends. I trust them; they trust me. It’s so fun to be able to go to work every day excited to see my people. Running your own business is hard work, but they all make it so rewarding.

What was your favorite childhood memory?
Gosh, this is a hard one! I had the best childhood and have the best memories. If I had to pick one, I would pick one of the days I got to go fishing with my parents and my cousin. We caught all kinds of fish on one of my little tiny fishing poles, spent the day in the mountains and had the best barbecue ever!
