Today we’d like to introduce you to Phaedra & Marticia Barraza.
Phaedra & Marticia , we appreciate you taking the time to share your story with us today. Where does your story begin?
Black Collar Tattoo started in October 2024 as a hope to create a shop that is intentional and creative. Phaedra and Marticia Barraza wanted to have a small team with big dreams. To be surrounded by fellow artists who want to be good to their clients, have a passion for tattooing, and be apart of their community. So, just a few months after we got married we found a location that felt just too right. We jumped in head first with a lot to learn along the way. Here we are two years later with a full shop of amazing, passionate, and talented artists. We’ve received Best Of Northern Utah 25 & 26 by the standard examiner. We have also competed in a few tattoo conventions as well and brought home some awards. We are very proud of these past two years!
Would you say it’s been a smooth road, and if not what are some of the biggest challenges you’ve faced along the way?
Overall yes it has been pretty smooth, we are fortunate to have a client base that keeps everyone busy. We have a large walk in base and most of our artists stay booked out 1-4 months at a time.
Our biggest struggle is mainly making a name for ourselves and that will come with time. We do all we can to be apart of community and still have a healthy work life balance!
Thanks for sharing that. So, maybe next you can tell us a bit more about your work?
Our team at BCT handles any style, we have created a group of artists so that no matter what ideas walk in the shop they have an artist who will create something to their vision. Also any budget, we have artists ranging from 14 years to 1 year in this industry. This help keeps us affordable to anyone, we love to create and we want to be able to do that with anyone. Our hourly ranges to $150-$100 per hour and a shop minimum of $80.
We also have our First Friday Flash Day!
Every first Friday we give back by starting tattoos at $50, this is a chance to come out and make memories! We have so much fun! Most of the time we have a line out the door!
Any advice for finding a mentor or networking in general?
Always do your research, make sure you share the same ideals as your potential mentor. Not every avenue into tattooing is the same. As this industry grows there’s a lack of proper training to become a good artist. If this is something you are ready to sacrifice a lot for then a whole new world will open up to you as a tattoo artist.
It’s a challenging field with a lot of competition, be yourself and take it seriously. We are so trusted by our clients that every piece we do is important.
