Today we’d like to introduce you to Sarah Swoffer.
Hi Sarah, thanks for sharing your story with us. To start, maybe you can tell our readers some of your backstory.
I was born in Salt Lake City. My parents love the outdoors and passed on that passion to me. My childhood is one gigantic memory of hiking and camping throughout Southern Utah. I currently live in Bend, Oregon where I continue to enjoy the outdoors.
I am an art teacher and when I am not teaching art, I am creating art. Painting mountain murals is one of my favorite past times. I offer my mountain murals in Moab because it is one of my favorite places to visit with my family.
I’m sure it wasn’t obstacle-free, but would you say the journey has been fairly smooth so far?
As a teacher, my primary struggle happened during COVID when we could no longer see our students. That is when I started offering art in our backyard.
My father was redoing his deck. I designed easels and we spread them out in a gigantic circle where everyone was six feet apart…. this is how I started teaching art outside of the traditional school system. After a couple of years of teaching both through my new company and through the school system, I now teach only art and only in my small business.
My murals are an extension of my art business. An area where I practice and apply my love of creating.
Appreciate you sharing that. What else should we know about what you do?
I paint murals and my specialty is mountain murals. I love creating them because they organically unfold on their own. I do not sketch them ahead of time…. the space dictates where the lines will grow.
I also love these murals because they are neutral enough that they support a space without overwhelming it. They bring calm and adventure simultaneously.
We all have different ways of looking at and defining success. How do you define success?
A beautiful space.
I feel successful when a blank wall now has depth and life and will pass on the joy to those who see it.
