Conversations with Shakira Liz Villanueva

Today we’d like to introduce you to Shakira Liz Villanueva.

Hi Shakira Liz, it’s an honor to have you on the platform. Thanks for taking the time to share your story with us – to start maybe you can share some of your backstory with our readers?
Since little I was so interested in the beauty industry. Always playing with my cousin as a stylist, using my sister’s old makeup and stuff like that. Growing up (in High School to be more specific) I spent a lot of hours, daily, watching makeup videos and practicing. After that, been an adult, having responsibilities, 3 jobs, moving to another state, started a relationship with my today husband, a single dad, I had started being a mom in every aspect to his 2 little boys (today my 2 lovely children) was something that kept me away from my passion for a lot of years. Finally, on October 2nd of last year, I gained that interest back when my HMUA was doing my makeup for my wedding. It took me a couple of days after that when I realized how amazing is to help other people feel confident in themselves through makeup and much better, be part of important moments in their life and get to celebrate, cry and just live that moment with them. And well…after that, I just started my makeup classes and work as soon as I thought I was ready for it. Today I keep working and doing my best so a lot of people can get to know my work. I’m currently working in my first makeup studio so I can open it as soon as I can. This journey is just starting and I’m excited about the future!

Alright, so let’s dig a little deeper into the story – has it been an easy path overall and if not, what were the challenges you’ve had to overcome?
Starting a business is never easy. It hasn’t been a smooth road at all. For me, there are struggles all the time. Try to do any kind of new tendency in makeup and fail in the attempt it can be so frustrating. You are going to deal with people that do not believe in your work and try to make you feel less than anyone else. In the beginning, you just want to expose yourself so people can get to know your work and when you think that you have the perfect customer and the moment in your hands to do it everything can get upside down (that happened to me once and it is so frustrating in a way that you start thinking maybe this is not the job for you) There’s a lot of struggles that I had and I’m going to keep having but if you know that you are doing your best and following your dream that’s all it takes to be successful in life.

Appreciate you sharing that. What else should we know about what you do?
I am a makeup artist, I do any kind of makeup but currently, I keep studying and getting all the courses I can to specialize in Brides. I’m 100% proud of myself for trying to follow my dream regardless of the circumstances and my lifestyle.

I think everyone has their unique way to do things, but what I think sets me apart from others is the way a treat people when it comes to cheering them up and making them feel special because I strongly believe that everyone is special in their own ways and makeup is always a good option to highlight our beauty.

Do you have any memories from childhood that you can share with us?
For sure, my favorite childhood memories (because I have a lot) are all those years that I had the opportunity to play freely in life, do what I liked, and have my own zoo. (I used to have a lot of different animals in my backyard, from dogs to ducks, haha!) My parents always wanted me to be happy and without any doubt they achieved it. They are the reason that I am the woman I am today.
