Today we’d like to introduce you to Sharon Anderson
Hi Sharon, thanks for sharing your story with us. To start, maybe you can tell our readers some of your backstory.
I’ve always loved fitness and trying unique workouts. My niece, Mindy, and I have a tradition of visiting fun, new fitness spots whenever we’re on vacation or just feeling spontaneous.
One time, while on vacation in St. George, we were searching for a great hot yoga studio and decided to check one out. We even brought along our younger nieces, thinking it would be a fun experience for all of us. But when we arrived, the studio was completely packed. People had to shift around just to make room for us, which felt a bit awkward. Before we were even fully set up, the instructor started yelling at us to hurry. Then, to make matters worse, she made us drop and do 50 push-ups for “disrupting” the class—even though others were still arriving. It was so very uncomfortable and caused one of my younger nieces to start crying. At that moment, I thought, I am never coming back here again. I didn’t like how packed in we were and it was hard to enjoy a workout when you were afraid to fall on your neighbor.
When we got home, I discovered HOTWORX and decided to try a free class. Their HOT Yoga session was exactly what I had been looking for! The virtual instructor meant I wouldn’t be yelled at if I was running late, and the infrared sauna setting—where only three people can fit—made for a much more comfortable and personal experience. I was hooked! I was also hooked on the benefits of infrared!
After attending regularly and trying all the classes, I brought Mindy (my general manager) along to experience it with me. We did a session together, and that’s when I turned to her and asked, “What if we opened our own studio?” Fast forward to today, and we now own 2 HOTWORX Taylorsville and West Jordan. Our Taylorsville location we built!
The process of building our studio was a rollercoaster—full of ups and downs, challenges, and learning curves. But every struggle was worth it because now, we’re celebrating one year at HOTWORX Taylorsville! 🎉 Seeing our community grow and watching members fall in love with the workouts just like we did has been the most rewarding part of this journey.
Alright, so let’s dig a little deeper into the story – has it been an easy path overall and if not, what were the challenges you’ve had to overcome?
One of the biggest struggles we faced was finding the right location. The process was long, and those commercial leases? They’re like 60 pages long! We actually had to change locations a couple of times before finally landing where we are now—and we couldn’t be happier with our spot!
We had a great contractor, but working with some of the subcontractors was… an adventure. Take the painter, for example. When he finished, I was so excited to check out the space—until I walked in and saw the ceiling was grey instead of black and the doors were grey instead of red. Confused, I asked him, “Why is the ceiling grey instead of black?” His response? “There are so many shades of black to choose from, so I just went with grey.” 😳 What?! Then, when I asked about the doors, he said, “It was too cold to paint them red, so I just painted them grey instead.” (just an fyi: I had specifically given the painter the exact name and brand that I wanted.)
That little color swap ended up delaying our opening by weeks because everything had to be repainted.
On top of that, getting permits from the city was a whole other challenge that slowed things down. It felt like every step of the process had a new obstacle to overcome.
Like I said—it was a roller coaster ride! But in the end, we’re so proud of what we built. 🚀🔥
Thanks – so what else should our readers know about your work and what you’re currently focused on?
I’ve spent most of my life as a stay-at-home mom, but I also ran my own billing company for many years, primarily handling billing for a private investigator. It was a remote job and fairly straightforward.
After my divorce, I decided to go back to SLCC, where I earned a degree as a Fitness Technician. From there, I developed a kids’ fitness program and taught classes at local daycares, which I absolutely loved.
Now, I work as a food program inspector for those same daycares while also running two HOTWORX studios. Fitness has always been a passion of mine, and I knew I needed to find my way back to it! 💪🔥
Is there anyone you’d like to thank or give credit to?
I couldn’t have done it without the incredible support of my husband, Johnny, and our amazing kids—they’ve been my biggest cheerleaders. And of course, Mindy! She’s in the studios all the time, working hard. We make a great team and work so well together. Our extended family and friends have also been incredibly encouraging and supportive throughout this journey, and I’m beyond grateful for all of them!
