Conversations with Silent Jester Studios

Today we’d like to introduce you to Silent Jester Studios.

Hello Silent Jester Studios, it’s an honor to have you on the platform. Thanks for taking the time to share your story with us – to start maybe you can share some of your backstories with our readers?
Hi! We are Maddie and Blade and we own Silent Jester Studios. We started our business just this year, January 2022, so we’re pretty early on in our journey.

Blade and I both started in the film industry, where we both realized our love for film, storytelling, editing, and working with each other. We were inspired early on to do some sort of production company or studio, and we actually attempted to start Silent Jester a couple of years ago, but it seemed clear that we needed a bit more experience before we took the leap to run it full time.

These past couple of years have been spent improving our skills by working in the industry, doing coursework in our free time, and doing freelance work. During that time, we discovered Motion Graphics and animation, which we fell in love with! Our focus shifted to honing our skills in the Adobe Suite, specifically After Effects, Illustrator, and Photoshop, so we could start our business as motion designers. Then in November 2021, it finally felt like the right time to try Silent Jester again.

We planned our business launch for the rest of 2021 and finally opened up in January. Now just a few months in, we have been doing great! We love working with our clients and building relationships, and we’re confident in our skills as motion designers to take on any project that comes our way.

We all face challenges, but looking back would you describe it as a relatively smooth road?
Starting a business together was exciting and stressful. It’s something we’ve wanted to do for many years it just never felt like the right time. When it did feel like the right time it was harder than expected to fully commit.

But since we have the passion and dedication to what we do, and since we made the time to prepare, we finally did what we’ve always wanted to do: Open our own studio. We’re very grateful for everyone who has helped us along the way with guidance and support.

This experience so far has had a big learning curve and it’s only the beginning.

Can you tell our readers more about what you do and what you think sets you apart from others?
We are a motion graphics animation studio and our primary focus is fully animated videos.

We love working on the whole animation process from beginning to end: scripting, storyboarding, animating, and everything in-between. Blade is great on the design side of things – he’s the Photoshop wizard between the two of us. I love coming up with concepts and getting into the gritty details of the animation. And between the both of us, we’re able to carry the load for the rest of the process.

Our favorite projects to work on tend to align with topics we believe in. The project that stands out the most to us is a climate change explainer video called “Vote for Humanity.” Climate change is a very important issue for us, so being able to create a video dedicated to the subject was extremely powerful, and being able to put our care and energy into what we believe made it very fulfilling.

We both love trying new techniques and adding them to our work. Blade has been playing around with stop-motion animation and I’m venturing into frame-by-frame hand-drawn animation. Combining these new methods with what we already know just expands what we can offer to our clients and keeps things interesting with our jobs.

Before we go, is there anything else you can share with us?
Blade and I are engaged to be married and we are the proud parents of two beautiful cats, Al and Ziggy. We love working and creating together and we can’t wait to see what the future holds!

In our free time, we also love to get back to our film roots and write and create short films. We are currently working on an ’80s style action adventure that we will hopefully take on the festival circuit this summer.
