Conversations with Stephen Fredericks

Today we’d like to introduce you to Stephen Fredericks.

Stephen Fredericks
Hi Stephen, we’re thrilled to have a chance to learn your story today. So, before we get into specifics, maybe you can briefly walk us through how you got to where you are today.

Let me take you back to where it all began, my hometown of Sandpoint, Idaho. Growing up, I didn’t have much, but I never let that stop me. My parents made some tough choices, and we often found ourselves without a place to call home. But even as a young boy, I found ways to make money by working on farms and chopping wood, all while juggling school.

It wasn’t always easy, though. Any money I earned would quickly disappear because my belongings would be pawned off for drugs (not by me). School was a bit of a challenge too, as I had to balance my studies with work. But you know what? All that hard work and determination has shaped who I am today. It’s funny how life works!
I never wanted the typical 9-5 job. Instead, I spent my time playing the guitar, writing music, and skateboarding. Eventually, my passion for music led me to attend the Conservatory of Recording Arts and Sciences in Arizona to become a sound engineer.
After graduating in 2010, I moved into a modest 3-bedroom apartment in North Hollywood with many others. It wasn’t luxurious, but hey, the rent was affordable! For the next decade, I dedicated myself to chasing my dream of becoming a successful sound engineer. But somewhere along the way, I realized that something was missing. The entertainment industry was keeping me away from my true passion: the great outdoors.
In 2015, I discovered rock climbing, and I was hooked! I put down the guitar and threw myself into this exciting new adventure. I joined a gym, took courses, and sought out experienced climbers to learn from. I even hired a guide to sharpen my skills and ensure I was on the right track. From that point on, my life became all about learning the ropes—pun intended!
From a young age, I’ve always wanted to make a difference in the world and give back. Rock climbing came into my life at a crucial moment and quite literally saved me. As I immersed myself in the climbing community, I met others with similar stories of overcoming hardships through climbing. It was incredible to witness the transformative power of this sport.
Owning and running my own business had always been a dream of mine. I wanted to be my own boss and have the freedom to make my own schedule—the classic American dream, right? But I could never find something that truly ignited my passion until I became a guide, and later, the head rock climbing guide, for companies in Joshua Tree.
Joshua Tree National Park had captured my heart ever since I first visited in 2010. I was obsessed with exploring every inch of the park. As a head guide, I realized that all those years of exploration had paid off. I could provide people with an extraordinary experience that seasonal guides couldn’t match. That’s when I became confident enough to start my own guiding company, Summit Climbing Guides. My drive, motivation, and curiosity for the industry pushed me forward.
When I look back on my past, the chaos my family went through for 15 years used to bring me shame. But now, I see it as a stepping stone to where I am today. I get to do what I love and play a small part in shaping people’s life stories. I feel incredibly fortunate, and I wouldn’t change a thing.
I’m sure it wasn’t obstacle-free, but would you say the journey has been fairly smooth so far?
Absolutely not! When I decided to start my own company in a market that was already filled with competitors, I knew it would be a tough journey to make my mark. Guiding is extremely fulfilling and can be quite a challenge, especially with unpredictable weather, occasional government shutdowns, the intricacies of securing permits, and let’s not forget the ever-changing rhythms of people’s lives. It’s like solving a complex puzzle every single day!

But you know what? One of the biggest hurdles I face is self-doubt. I mean, who hasn’t had those moments of uncertainty, right? It’s something we all go through, but I’m determined to keep chipping away at it. It’s a work in progress, and I know I’m not alone in that struggle. So, here’s to embracing the journey and overcoming those doubts, one step at a time!

Alright, so let’s switch gears a bit and talk business. What should we know about your work?
I am primarily a rock-climbing guide, but I like to see myself as more of an adventure guide. My main goal is to create exciting experiences for people visiting Joshua Tree National Park or the Los Angeles area.

One of my specialties is teaching rock-climbing courses, with a strong emphasis on safety. Most of the people who join my courses are experienced indoor climbers who want to learn how to be self-sufficient. I’m known for my thoroughness, encouragement, punctuality, and dedication to giving it my all as a guide.

Starting and running this business all on my own has been a source of great pride for me. However, what truly brings me joy and continues to make me proud are the guests who have trusted me, pushed themselves, and achieved growth as better, safer, and more evolved climbers. It’s been an incredible journey to witness their progress.

What sets me apart from others in this industry is my deep passion, love, and drive for what I do. When I’m not working, you’ll find me out exploring, climbing, and scouting for new and exciting areas to take my guests. My ultimate goal is to provide folks with the absolute best experience possible. So, if you’re up for an adventurous journey, I’m here to make it happen!

Before we go, is there anything else you can share with us?
Thank you so much for reaching out, even though I don’t have anything specific to share. I wanted to take a moment to express my gratitude to all of you. Our conversation has been an absolute blast, and I truly appreciate the effort you’ve put into connecting with me. I’m eagerly looking forward to what the future holds for Summit Climbing Guides and the exciting journey that lies ahead.
Let’s create an adventure that lasts a lifetime!
