Today we’d like to introduce you to Yvonne Song.
Hi Yvonne, we’d love for you to start by introducing yourself.
I moved to this city alone to attend NYU, coming from the UK and Shanghai, and started out not knowing anyone here. In my first semester, I was lucky to meet a wide range of creative people who introduced me to their circles and helped me find my footing in the scene.
I began as a photographer, shooting fashion and editorial work, which later led to shooting on-set images for celebrities and artists on music video productions. That work opened more doors, and eventually I started working in LA as well. Alongside photography, I became a DJ, and I’ve since played in Paris, New York, Spain, and Shanghai. Most of my opportunities have come through word of mouth and real-life connections—meeting people, collaborating, and building relationships organically over time. Now I am creative directing different projects, both producing shooting and planning myself
Would you say it’s been a smooth road, and if not what are some of the biggest challenges you’ve faced along the way?
It definitely hasn’t been a smooth road. Moving here at 19, I didn’t know anyone in the US at all. I had lived in the UK for nine years and had never really spent time in the US before coming alone for college. My parents are based in Shanghai and work in completely different fields, so I didn’t have any built-in connections or guidance in the creative industry.
In the beginning, it was really hard—socially, creatively, and emotionally. Everything required courage: putting myself out there, exploring unfamiliar spaces, and taking risks without knowing where they’d lead. A lot of it came down to persistence and luck—meeting the right people at the right time who believed in me, pushed me as a creative, and helped open doors. Those early struggles shaped how I work today and made me much more independent and resilient.
Alright, so let’s switch gears a bit and talk business. What should we know about your work?
I’m a 23 year old creative director and content creator, working across music, fashion, entertainment, and event production. My practice is very multidisciplinary—I move fluidly between photography, video, film, and creative direction, often blending documentary storytelling with fashion and commercial aesthetics.
On the entertainment side, I’m especially proud of being brought on as the official behind-the-scenes photographer for the *“I Just Wanna Rock”* music video, as well as serving as set photographer for Amaarae’s *“Angels in Tibet”* music video and shooting the official VEVO BTS content. A major personal highlight was when JT genuinely connected with a video I shot for her and reached out directly, which led to me shooting her NYC Pride show and pop-up events. I’m currently also working with Miguel on content, which has been an exciting collaboration. I also am lucky to shoot and worked with Gali as well as lil Nas, chainsmoker, bunt, Camila cabello, alchemist…
In the music space, I’m proud to have shot press campaign covers for Sparrow & Barbossa—one of my favorite DJ duos, whose music I’ve long supported and played myself. Alongside my visual work, I’m also a self-taught DJ and have been booked to play in Paris, New York, and Spain. One project that really represents my creative spirit was self-producing my own Boiler Room–style set at a local 7-Eleven in Shanghai—the video ended up blowing up and reaching a wide audience. I also got asked to cover boiler room content for Shanghai tour
For fashion wise I been Kim Shui her content person for almost 3 years now I do all her reels and help with all runway and fashion week shows !
What sets me apart is flexibility and range. I’m able to adapt my style depending on the project, whether that’s raw documentary, high-fashion visuals, or polished commercial content. I also have a broad technical skill set—from film, photo, and video to drone work—which allows me to execute ideas from concept to final delivery. Growing up and living in different cities around the world has deeply shaped my perspective, exposing me to diverse cultures and art scenes that continue to inform and elevate my work today.
How do you think about luck?
I think it depends on if you at the right place at the right time and meeting the right people. It’s a mix of luck and also like who you surround yourself with. I think surrounding yourself with talented individuals really uplift you and you can also learn from them. They definitely bring you positive energy and luck
