Today we’d like to introduce you to 9millyjay
Hi 9millyjay, please kick things off for us with an introduction to yourself and your story.
I’ve always had a love for music. when I was around five, I had got a small drum set for Christmas. I used them until they fell apart. I started knowing I wanted to be a music artist. more around the sixth grade I didn’t have wifi. so I downloaded apps for beats and recording at school. and when I got home from downloading those apps. I wrote to the beats and recorded to them I eventually told my whole sixth grade class. I wanted to be a music artist. and we would freestyle in class or at recess for fun. fast forward about around 9th grade. I was always finding my self free styling with my friends. and one of my friends also enjoyed music. so that’s when we both started taking it serious. and we each got one of our own home studios. and started the journey from there.
Alright, so let’s dig a little deeper into the story – has it been an easy path overall and if not, what were the challenges you’ve had to overcome?
it definitely hasn’t been a very easy road. it is definitely tough most people think music. is very easy to make and publish I sit for hours and hours. writing a song touching things up just to send it to the engineer. and even mixing and mastering is a tough part to get past. the most hardest part of publishing music is releasing a song. and trying to get people to listen and selling the brand. all the social media videos lyric videos are time consuming. sometimes you do all this work to receive nothing, rejection and hate comments. but that’s the fun you find your self more and more through the process. and even notice you start getting better and certain things get easier.
Thanks for sharing that. So, maybe next you can tell us a bit more about your work?
I am music artist more specifically rapper. I’ve done lots of different styles of rap and R&B. I’m most known for my music. and my attention to detail within my music. I always go through multiple complications. on what sounds best I will make 6 verses to one song. then choose the best two or three from them. I do the same with the mixing and mastering process. everything just has to be perfect to me. I’m most proud of my growth on YouTube, Spotify, Apple Music and tiktok. I started releasing more social media short videos. I started this year at 120 subscribers on YouTube. now sitting at about 530 in just 6 months. as for Spotify I have about 10,000 streams between all of my songs. and today I hit 200 followers on Spotify as well. Apple Music was a very slow start. but I’m about to hit 1,000 all-time streams on. three or four songs as for tiktok its going a little slow. but I can see it growing within the next 4-5 months sporadically. what sets makes different from others in this industry? as for within Salt Lake City I say I’m different from everyone. in a sense for my work ethic in music. and for how many years I’ve still been going. I’m a very straight forward music artist. I don’t try and be something I’m not within my music. and everything I post or release is one hundred percent. algorithmic number and engagement wise. I never take the easy route because. that’s just not what this industry is.
Is there something surprising that you feel even people who know you might not know about?
lots of people seem surprised on how long. I’ve been making music for witch has been about 5-6 years. another thing people are surprised on. is how much I actually invest into my music. I typically spend around 300- 400$ per song. I’ve probably invested about 25,000$ within the past 3 years into my music with out any paid promotion.
