Today we’d like to introduce you to Andrew Milne
Alright, so thank you so much for sharing your story and insight with our readers. To kick things off, can you tell us a bit about how you got started?
I started Slam City Market because I wanted to create an additional income stream. A simple business that I can run individually. I love thrifting, records, cassette tapes, skateboards and painting. In April 2023 I started building inventory and I hired a local SLC branding business Designed by Diamond to create a website and logo package. From there, I started selling online and applying for 10×10 vending booths at local events. Doing events has opened an incredible networking field with event hosts and other vendors. Slam City Market has grown to now be offering its own bi-weekly event series on Mondays at Uinta Brewing Co. We are looking to add more opportunities for makers and vendors to get out and sell their creations and unique finds.
Can you talk to us a bit about the challenges and lessons you’ve learned along the way. Looking back would you say it’s been easy or smooth in retrospect?
My initial hurdles were stocking inventory that will actually sell and the expense associated. After working the 10×10 booth about 10 times I realized what was selling. Working events is no joke. With all the time spent preparing inventory, loading a vehicle, commute, booth setup, event time, break down, load back up, commute home, unpack and re-organize. Haha it’s a lot! I have been simplifying and curating my event products per show and its been helping a ton. Also, its just personally exhausting to build yourself up and keep going. I make mistakes and I have to remind myself that they are going to happen. Personally, I’m learning how to not be so hard on myself and just keep moving forward.
Appreciate you sharing that. What else should we know about what you do?
Im a Screen Printer at heart! I started screen printing at age 15 and worked for various companies from Ogden to SLC. I eventually landed with Spilt Ink (now Huge Brands) in 2009 at a 900 sq ft building located at Kilby Court. I worked with my partner Jeremy Conder for 9 years and we grew that business into a thriving successful company. I parted ways with Huge Brands in 2019 to spend more time with my kids and focus on new projects.
I played in a few local SLC bands from 2008-2013 Spell Talk, Breakers, Pest Rulz and a few others. I have always loved playing music!
We’re always looking for the lessons that can be learned in any situation, including tragic ones like the Covid-19 crisis. Are there any lessons you’ve learned that you can share?
Covid was so challenging. Learning how to navigate that situation led me to want to build an e-commerce business that I can run from home.
