Daily Inspiration: Meet Annette and Troy Allan

Today we’d like to introduce you to Annette and Troy Allan.

Annette and Troy, we appreciate you taking the time to share your story with us today. Where does your story begin?
We spent twenty years as an active-duty military family. We lived all over the United States. After retirement, we knew we wanted to start a business that focused on creativity and design. That’s how we decided on starting a fiber mill. We also wanted to raise animals, sheep and alpacas, to use their fibers in creating a line of yarns. Our goal is to connect to nature in a creative way. Creating yarn allows us to do this.

We all face challenges, but looking back, would you describe it as a relatively smooth road?
We started our business during the pandemic, which was very difficult. It was stressful enough dealing with Covid, but then starting a business on top of that was challenging. We also had to learn how to operate all our machinery. That took some time and lots of practice. There is a lot to understand when processing natural fibers.

Appreciate you sharing that. What else should we know about what you do?
We create yarns from natural fibers such as wool and alpaca. We work with clients to process the fibers they send to our fiber mill. We also create yarns from our animals. We do small batch processing, which allows for high-quality yarns to be produced. We just completed our yarn shop located on our ranch.

We’d love to hear about how you think about risk taking?
We’ve decided to start focusing more on our line of yarns. We are slowly moving away from doing so much client work. It’s a huge risk to just do our yarn, but that is really where we want our focus to be. We love the freedom of freely designing and creating yarn for ourselves. We will still work with select clients.
