Today we’d like to introduce you to Beka Price
Alright, so thank you so much for sharing your story and insight with our readers. To kick things off, can you tell us a bit about how you got started?
I am so excited to share a little bit about myself. Thanks for the opportunity!
Okay, so let me give you a little personal background first on how I got here. I am originally from Brazil. I was born and raised in Brazil and moved to the States when I was 21 years old. I took a semester off of college in Brazil where my major was English and I was hoping to stay in the US for about six months, improve the language, then I would go back home and work as a translator. Well, it turns out I ended up meeting the guy that later became my husband…and the rest is history.
My husband and I live in Salt Lake City and we have four wonderful daughters who are my main motivation and inspiration. Being a mom is my biggest accomplishment.
After I had my first baby I went back to college and decided to register for a photography class. At that time all I wanted was to learn how to take better pictures. I was not thinking of making this into a business. But as the time went by and some friends started to ask for photos of their families, pregnancy, kids etc, I felt the desire to look for more education and found an amazing mentor who very much shaped my style of capturing people and the foundation of having a photography business.
Since I was very young I was interested and involved in all things business and entrepreneurship so creating a business wasn’t too crazy for me and it felt exciting. I enjoy all the business side of things although of course it is a never ending task.
I always loved everything related to pregnancy and childbirth so specializing in maternity came very naturally to me. Capturing and celebrating women at this stage of life is just the absolute joy!
I am passionate about helping others have sustainable businesses and find their own success, especially women, so I dedicate a lot of my time participating in forums and any initiative that is related to small business improvement and engagement. I love staying involved in humanitarian work, community efforts to help include women into society and be successful.
I teach photography workshops and travel around the world for destination shoots and curated travel experiences. I have been to countries such as France, Belgium, Italy, Brazil, Africa and across the U.S.
In 2014 I launched Beka Price Photography and it quickly became the most sought-after photography studio in Utah and the only one to offer a true full-service, high-end boutique environment and experience, allowing clients to enjoy an unmatched experience.
Beka Price Photography is an award winning portrait studio based in Salt Lake City, Utah specializing in fine art maternity, newborn and family photography.
My style of photography is classic, editorial and sophisticated. Every client that comes to the studio I get to work closely with each one of them to create a custom portrait session that really showcases their true essence and the beauty of motherhood and womanhood.
I’m sure it wasn’t obstacle-free, but would you say the journey has been fairly smooth so far?
First of all, let’s point out the fact that photography is a male-heavy industry and so you can imagine what it can be like for any woman trying to stand out and thrive in such a scenario. Don’t get me wrong, I have great photography friends who are male who have supported me along the way but we know that there are a lot of stereotypical assumptions about what a woman is capable of. Thankfully we are seeing a shift in the last decade and a large number of woman-owned photography businesses are indeed breaking through and making their mark.
Consistently learning and improving my technical skills and artistic vision were key, along with confidence and pure HUSTLE. You have to hustle everyday if you want to have a successful business and no matter what industry that is.
The other challenge is that photography doesn’t have a standard when it comes to pricing. How much should we charge for a portrait session? How much to charge for the edited images? So many questions. The business side of things is difficult and more photographers are burning out and closing shop. Understanding how to run a business, market yourself, have a savings fund for when your equipment needs to be replaced, all the little things.
I happen to love this part of owning a business and focus on not just creating an amazing experience for my clients, but I also take care of myself and my family. I want to feel compensated for the effort and time I put in and enjoy my career. I want to have time for my family and to live life. I don’t want to work myself to the ground and feel sad. Eveyrone should be able to continue to love what they do and find that joy they often are so eager to offer to others.
Thanks – so what else should our readers know about your work and what you’re currently focused on?
At Beka Price Photography we have a team of hair and makeup artists, editors, a virtual assistant and in-house assistant so we can run things more smoothly. Our client experience is our number one priority. We want everyone to feel and look their best version.
Currently we have 3 studios in the Salt Lake area. We have grown so much in the decade that I’ve been in business it’s pretty incredible.
We also offer headshots and branding sessions specifically focused on women in business. This genre is something I don’t advertise as much as I do the others but it fills a big portion on our calendar.
Recently I was highlighted in the Utah Business magazine and I was their exclusive photographer for the 30 Women to Watch 2024 award as well as Utah’s Most Influential Woman 2024 award. I am honored that companies such as UB trust my work and continue to hire me for their projects.
For the maternity, newborn and family genre I have had the pleasure to work with many celebrities, NFL players, olympic athletes and high profile clients that have entrusted me to photograph their babies and families.
My work has been featured on several communication channels, including People Magazine.
Where we are in life is often partly because of others. Who/what else deserves credit for how your story turned out?
First and foremost my husband Brandon and my daughters. They are my biggest supporters and cheerleaders.
My mom and my dad have been my role models and taught me how to not give up and really be focused on the things I want to accomplish, no matter how hard it is.
My siblings and their spouses are so encouraging and I know I can always count on them.
My best friends: Ana, she helped me from the ground up when all I had was just the bare idea of creating a photography business and she has supported me in many ways I may never be able to list them all. Luciene, she is also a photographer and through photography we became close friends. Dany, she is like my right-arm, she is a sounding board and we often can be found traveling together.
