Daily Inspiration: Meet Dallin Wells

Today we’d like to introduce you to Dallin Wells.

Hi Dallin, can you start by introducing yourself? We’d love to learn more about how you got to where you are today?
My work began in high school. I was exceptional at video production and actually enjoyed it. From there to now, I’ve had three internships, worked at two agencies as well as a TV show, promoted dozens of brands, and all the while built my portfolio of skills.

Can you talk to us a bit about the challenges and lessons you’ve learned along the way. Looking back, would you say it’s been easy or smooth in retrospect?
It’s always been a struggle. My biggest struggle has always been being given a chance by clients or potential employers who don’t know me. But I completely understand why. It’s very difficult for me to hand off responsibilities that need to be done well. That’s why I typically produce video content alone. I have an unrealistic high standard for my work and putting that expectation on others is too much to ask. (Even if I had all the money in the world)

As you know, we’re big fans of you and your work. For our readers who might not be as familiar what can you tell them about what you do?
I specialize in creating video content that speaks emotionally to the audience. Lately, it’s consisted of Toyota social media ads, but my methods of creation are multifaceted and work in long-form cinema as well.

I try to concentrate my pride into my next project. If I’m so absorbed in my latest and greatest performing content, that gives me the excuse to coast for a while. Whereas I’d rather consistently feel the drive to do better. It may be some kind of complex, but it’s the only way I know how to grow.

I think the biggest thing that sets me apart is how I execute my work. I really care about my videos resonating with people and I am extremely producer-brained. Meaning, I know the time and effort required for a given video. And if that doesn’t match the budget I am given, I engage my creative-brained self to come up with a unique solution.

We’d be interested to hear your thoughts on luck and what role, if any, you feel it’s played for you?
I would say I’ve been really lucky twice. Both had to do with opportunities that were at the right place and right time. But I’m sure I’ve missed dozens of strokes of luck that were given to other well-deserving people.

Luck, being good or bad, all kind of evens out over time.
