Today we’d like to introduce you to Daniel Jenney.
Hi Daniel, we’re thrilled to have a chance to learn your story today. So, before we get into specifics, maybe you can briefly walk us through how you got to where you are today?
I started in photography after college. I attended Fordham University and received my Bachelors of Accounting and shortly after graduation landed an accounting job with a large corporate bank… and I hated it. I was lost until I met a photographer who was having trouble expanding his real estate photography business, he needed someone who was good at math to start drafting floor plans, I easily could do that so I helped him out and started apprenticing and learning photography while I drafted plans alongside him. We built up from this start and were very successful for 18+ years, even all through Covid, shooting high end real estate in the New York area. We expanded to have multiple photographers and offer all sorts of products from aerial photography, videography and even augmented and virtual reality. I never stopped trying to learn about photography, though this I became involved in the arts side of photography. I found my artistic voice and ended up appearing in a few galleries and exhibitions. The art side is a nice counter point to the driven product and deadline photography business
The pandemic also changed the working dynamic for my wife and I. She changed to work from home , and still does to this day, which gave us the freedom to not be tethered to a major city for commuting purposes. I was feeling a bit bored and stir-crazy with the job in general, especially with the day to day grind, so we visited Ogden, Utah in 2021 in our search for a second act and loved the smaller city feel and access to all the outdoor activities we love, right at arms-length and not a multi-hour drive away. We moved in late 2022. I took a year off when we arrived here, I fully admit I needed the break, But have since reformed my business over the past 18 months as well as rekindled my love of photography here in Utah.
Alright, so let’s dig a little deeper into the story – has it been an easy path overall and if not, what were the challenges you’ve had to overcome?
It has never been a smooth road. Ever day is a new challenge. A new technique, piece of equipment, or method is always right around the corner and you really don’t know how to implement it until you’re on the shoot and just have to do it, and act like you’ve done it 100 times.
Marketing myself and the business has also been on ongoing challenge; its ever changing. Over my career it has gone from in-office seminars and postcard mailers to blast email marketing to algorithmic manipulation via Google and social media platforms.
Starting over in new city and state here in Utah was actually not too daunting. Ogden has a thriving and vibrant art community alongside a robust support system for small business growth. I’ve found it very welcoming and its nice to have the assistance while navigating a completely new environment
As you know, we’re big fans of you and your work. For our readers who might not be as familiar what can you tell them about what you do?
I’m mostly known for architecture, interior design, and aerial photography in my professional career capacity. Artistically, I have received accolades for abstraction, minimalist landscape, and smaller scope street photography. I do tend to not be drawn to set-up, choreographed shots. I think there is something really special in finding the art in your environment. I feel being multi-disciplined in photography and continuing to be curious is what really sets me apart. I hate being pigeon-holed into a single defined role.
Let’s talk about our city – what do you love? What do you not love?
Ogden is a truly unique city and that’s what attracted my wife and I to it. It is Clearly passionate about the arts and small businesses. the amount of successful entrepreneurs here across many different professions is really wonderful. Its an outdoors city too. plenty of recreation at the finger tips no matter the sport or season. We also did like the history of Ogden and the fact that it is looked at as a little rough an tumble, that really spoke to us.
