Daily Inspiration: Meet Derek Sturman

Today we’d like to introduce you to Derek Sturman.

Hi Derek, so excited to have you with us today. What can you tell us about your story?
I started out in Video work mainly just for fun and because I was interested in it, and discovered landscape photography and specifically fine art digital night scape milky way photography and found my passion, it started as an obsession that I am now pushing to make a large portion of my Career in educating others on how to photograph the Milkyway.

Can you talk to us a bit about the challenges and lessons you’ve learned along the way. Looking back would you say it’s been easy or smooth in retrospect?
Like anything worthwhile, it’s been complicated and not always a clear path. Getting competitive or satisfying results is extremely time-consuming and requires a lot of investment in time and travel and planning. It’s even harder to make those commitments and ventures profitable. It takes a lot of dedication to get good shots, even just tracked skies, because the conditions battle you and many shots take entire nights of shooting to pull off.

As you know, we’re big fans of you and your work. For our readers who might not be as familiar what can you tell them about what you do?
I’m probably most recognized for my nightscape or milky way photography which is a huge passion for me and probably where the majority of my photography experience has been focused. My passion is in any kind of compelling image creation and I really have a love for digital fine art landscapes and Milkyway images. I work in the marketing content creation field and have for several years now, working in a few different market areas including industrial product manufacturing for oil companies, firearms, and now the automotive sector. I get really excited about creating images that compel the viewer or captivate them in some regard.

What matters most to you? Why?
In my work? the feeling it creates or portrays. Images for me have always been a method of communicating something words fall short of doing.
