Today we’d like to introduce you to Doug Stilson.
Hi Doug, can you start by introducing yourself? We’d love to learn more about how you got to where you are today?
Living in this little community it’s not the easiest thing to find a decent job. Especially, when you have a special needs son who needs 24/7 care. So one night talking with some friends who Boulder here in Joes Valley; we started talking about starting a coffee shop to meet the needs of the community and the climbers.
We got the wild idea that would start the coffee shop in our house so that Camie could be home with Dalton around his school schedule which includes Christmas break, Spring break, etc. Having Cup of Joes in our house allows us to be here for Dalton and serve some world-class espresso.
So we just jumped right in, remodeled our front room, and utilizing our kitchen we started Cup of Joes. If you’re visiting Joes Valley, we would love to see you!
Can you talk to us a bit about the challenges and lessons you’ve learned along the way? Looking back would you say it’s been easy or smooth in retrospect?
Obviously, COVID was a big bump in the road.
Thankfully, we were able to weather the last couple of years and we are still going strong! Running a coffee shop out of your house isn’t the easiest thing to do. Figuring out how to manage a busy business with a lot of foot traffic in your home as well as the family living in the home has been interesting, but successful!
Our city has been incredible to help us with permits and licensing to be able to take on this adventure.
Alright, so let’s switch gears a bit and talk business. What should we know about your work?
Doug works for the local power company and Camie has dedicated her life to taking care of her kids, especially Dalton. Camie is the sole owner of Cup of Joes and is Doug’s boss at the coffee shop. Camie was born to be a barista.
We have had so many people from around the world tell us that Camie makes the best Cappuccinos they have ever had. Camie is too humble to acknowledge this but that’s why I say she makes world-famous espresso drinks!
What does success mean to you?
We define success in the friendships that we make owning Cup of Joes. We have made so many wonderful friends from all over the world. We invite people literally into our home and over the time they stay here in Joes Valley we end up having the best relationships and making such wonderful friends!
We also believe that success is when our customers leave Cup of Joes happy and loving their choice of drink!
