Daily Inspiration: Meet Elena Thomas

Today we’d like to introduce you to Elena Thomas.

Hi Elena, so excited to have you with us today. What can you tell us about your story?
I launched this little dream right after my own engagement. I’d spent months searching for a wedding dress that felt like me. I wanted something beautiful, timeless, elegant with certain details. After trying over 20 gowns, I realized none of them matched my vision. I like the bottom of one dress and the top of another, and the sleeves of another one. Also, being a shorty ( I’m only 5’3”), I would have to do a lot of alterations to the dress. I wasn’t asking for too much, I just wanted a dress that would tell my story and highlight my style and beauty. So I did what I’ve done my whole life: I designed it myself. I’ve studied art and design since I was 10 years old, so it was a good test for my skills.
When my girlfriends saw the dress, they loved it! They wanted me to help them to design their wedding dresses, so it became my weekend hobby. Soon, I was busy helping all the girls I knew at school and work with their wedding dresses so what was a hobby once turned into a small business.
Word of mouth carried me to local wedding shows across Northern and Southern Utah and the surrounding areas. Today, I’m based in St. George, Utah, working with brides from all over the world. I offer virtual consultation and worldwide shipping. What began as one gown for one girl (me!) has become a global, online atelier where brides collaborate directly with my team and I.

I’m sure it wasn’t obstacle-free, but would you say the journey has been fairly smooth so far?
Honestly, it’s been a pretty smooth road. When I just started, I treated it like a hobby. I designed my own dress, then a friend’s, then a friend-of-a-friend’s. With no pressure to “scale overnight,” I let the work grow through word of mouth, and I used that time to build good habits ( as I was still learning the industry): a clear sketch-to-final dress process, reliable fabric and lace suppliers, realistic timelines, and a simple, respectful way of communicating with brides.

The “struggles” were more like learning curves: figuring out sustainable pricing for fully custom dress, setting boundaries so projects didn’t balloon, navigating wedding-season rushes, and smoothing out online orders. That’s also why I created a detailed measurement chart and step-by-step video guide, I added production time line check points, and tightened our quality-control with my workroom. I also learned to say no to some customers or requests.

As you know, we’re big fans of you and your work. For our readers who might not be as familiar what can you tell them about what you do?
Most days you’ll find me with a pencil in one hand and lace in the other, helping brides turn a dream into a dress. I’m the founder and designer of My Amazing Wedding Dress, a made-to-measure online studio where every gown begins with inspiration and becomes a one-of-a-kind piece for its bride.

I’m known for unique custom designs and modest dress designs that are size-free. We create each dress pattern based on the unique bride’s proportions and measurements. By using this technique, we can craft the dress that is embodied bride’s body and style, also it helps minimize the final alterations. While the average wedding dress alteration cost is around $700 on top of the actual dress cost in a traditional bridal boutique. Our custom designs start at $975 and average around $1300. About 9 out of 10 of our brides tell us they didn’t need any alterations.

What sets us apart is simple: no standard sizes, clear communication, transparent budgets, and a collaborative process that feels enjoyable—from first sketch to final bustle. My work is part art, part engineering, and entirely about honoring a bride’s story—so she can wear it not just on her wedding day, but in her memory forever. After more than 10 years, I’m proud of the team I built from scratch and the 1,000+ brides who we’ve helped design unique gowns without breaking the bank. I believe our unique concept and accessible pricing are what truly set us apart from the traditional bridal industry.

Pricing:

  • $975-$2500
