Daily Inspiration: Meet Emily Crandall

Today we’d like to introduce you to Emily Crandall.

Hi Emily, so excited to have you on the platform. So, before we get into questions about your work life, maybe you can bring our readers up to speed on your story and how you got to where you are today.
I have loved to bake since I was little. I would make cookies for my family all the time. As a kid, I loved to watch my dad make homemade cinnamon rolls and pies. Now as an adult baking is one of my favorite pastimes. I love to teach my kids how to bake. I had always dreamed of owning a little bakery, but always just kept it in the back of my mind. I would occasionally bake treats and take them into work to share. Eventually, I had coworkers asking me to make them specific treats and paying me to make them. That’s when I realized that I should just go for it! In January 2021 I decided to get started. It has been an amazing 2 years of going out of my comfort zone. I have met so many amazing people.

Can you talk to us a bit about the challenges and lessons you’ve learned along the way? Looking back would you say it’s been easy or smooth in retrospect?
I think the biggest struggle was just getting up enough courage to start. It was scary to put myself out there. It is still hard sometimes. Since starting it has been a struggle to be consistent. I work and have children so finding time to bake isn’t always easy. There have been a lot of late nights and early mornings so that I can be there for my family as well as my amazing customers.

It has also been hard to find products. I started my business in 2021. Finding products has been hit or miss. Pricing of ingredients has been all over the place. Currently, eggs have skyrocketed! With these challenges, I have had to limit my menu or change it up. For example, the pretzel rods I was purchasing always had a good portion of them come broken, so I started offering “mini” size pretzel rods to use up all of the broken pieces. They have become my most popular item.

Thanks for sharing that. So, maybe next you can tell us a bit more about your work?
I make and sell baked goods out of my home. I sell Caramel apples, caramel pretzels, decorated sugar cookies, and more! My customers tell me my caramel apples are better than Disneyland and Rocky Mountain Chocolate Factory. I love being able to offer delicious homemade treats for any occasion.

What do you like best about our city?
I love the small-town vibe. People helping people, supporting small businesses, just overall kind and generous group of people.
