Daily Inspiration: Meet Gabrielle Thompson

Today we’d like to introduce you to Gabrielle Thompson

Hi Gabrielle, it’s an honor to have you on the platform. Thanks for taking the time to share your story with us – to start maybe you can share some of your backstory with our readers?
I am an artist originally from Anchorage, Alaska. I have been creating art in the form of drawing and watercolor painting for as long as I can remember. I began experimenting with acrylic paint when I was 10, and it has been a positive outlet for me ever since. I find painting to be a beautiful decompression and a space for grounding. A way to reflect on things that bring fire to my life, and bring a little extra gratitude into the day-to-day.

Alright, so let’s dig a little deeper into the story – has it been an easy path overall and if not, what were the challenges you’ve had to overcome?
I have always struggled with perfectionism in all aspects of my life, including with painting. Many times, when I would begin to paint, I would have a lot of internal judgement and scrutiny. I would tell myself that I was only pretending to be an artist, and that my work had no value. I would scrutinize over every detail in my paintings, trying to make myself into a painter I wasn’t. Often times, this fear and shame would feel paralyzing, and I would go long periods of time without painting at all.

I struggled with this for many years. Assigning my value as a person to how well my paintings were received by others. It wasn’t until about a year ago that I was able to challenge this mindset. I have been able to reclaim painting for myself as something I do for passion rather than achievement. I focus on enjoying the actual process of creating now instead of being wholly focused on the outcome. Most time I paint now, I am able to access a “flow state” and follow my intuition. I am now able to be curious about what it feels like to be a human, and how I can express my version of reality through colors and shapes.

Of course, the doubts still arise from time to time, but they no longer define who I am as an artist.

As you know, we’re big fans of you and your work. For our readers who might not be as familiar what can you tell them about what you do?
I specialize in abstract landscape paintings. I work with acrylic paints, and often aim to emulate a digital art style in my work. Landscape painting sits at the confluence of what I love most: embarking on adventures with those I love, and creating art to help commemorate those special moments. I’m fortunate to spend a lot of my free time climbing, skiing and running in wonderful places which leave me with no shortage of inspiration. All of my landscape paintings are directly based on personal experiences I’ve had in beautiful landscapes. I feel fervently for time in the mountains, and use vibrant, high-contrast pallets to convey the pure joy imparted by the places I love.

What was your favorite childhood memory?
My favorite childhood memories took place at my families rustic cabin in Alaska. My younger brothers and I would run through the woods, make up imaginary games, and find a playground in the natural landscape. Birds would eat out of our hands, and we felt free. No one else around, no limitations to the adventures to be had.

I think painting, in many ways, emulates this childlike bliss for me. There are no limits to what you can create from a blank canvas. It often feels like a grand adventure to paint, and I feel, once again, like a child.
