Daily Inspiration: Meet Gagandeep Chahal

Today we’d like to introduce you to Gagandeep Chahal

Alright, so thank you so much for sharing your story and insight with our readers. To kick things off, can you tell us a bit about how you got started?
My story begins in Punjab, India, where I was raised in a household that valued being highly educated as a crucial stepping stone to success. My grandfather served for decades as an Officer in the Indian Army, and my parents, both doctors, dedicated over 30 years to healing others. Personally, my early education at St. Joseph’s Convent is what ignited my passion for learning, ultimately inspiring me to pursue a Bachelor’s degree in Mechanical Engineering from Punjab Technical University. Thereafter, in 2008, I embraced a bold adventure by leaving the familiar comforts of my home country to pursue a Master’s degree in the United States. This transition was not without its hurdles, as I had to adapt to a new culture and environment. However, the encouragement from my parents back home became my source of strength, guiding me through this life-changing experience.

My academic success opened doors to a world that fascinated me—data. I began my career as a consultant in the technology sector, focusing on Business Intelligence and data analytics. My fascination with data wasn’t just about the numbers; it was about the stories they told and the insights they revealed.

During these years, I honed my skills in data analytics, setting the foundation for what would become my lifelong passion—uncovering actionable insights from mountains of information. My appetite for business grew alongside my love for data & technology, and soon I was taking on leadership roles that allowed me to not just analyze but shape the direction of data-driven projects.

I come with a strong technical education in Engineering, with a double Master’ in Mechanical Engineering and Software Engineering, along with a Leadership endorsement from Cornell University.

I’m sure it wasn’t obstacle-free, but would you say the journey has been fairly smooth so far?
I’ve always believed that “life is not a bed of roses,” and my journey from an international student to the Vice President of a multi-billion dollar bank came with its own set of challenges. I moved from India at the age of 23 to pursue my M.S. in Engineering at Cal State Fullerton in 2008. This transition to the U.S. meant facing a significant cultural shift, filled with the struggle of trying to assimilate into a new environment, navigating various hardships, and dealing with the deep sense of missing my parents back home. Even with a close circle of friends, there were moments when the desire to return home almost overshadowed my professional aspirations.

Balancing multiple on campus part-time jobs while managing a demanding university curriculum was no easy feat. As a full-time engineering student, I juggled the pressure of coursework with the financial strain of living expenses, often feeling overwhelmed. The journey was marked by hard work and sometimes tears of despair, but through it all, my determination to succeed professionally and make my family proud kept me going.

It was this zeal, dedication, and resilience that ultimately enabled me to break into the corporate world. I learned that each obstacle was not just a challenge but a stepping stone, pushing me closer to my dreams. While the path was far from smooth, it shaped me into who I am today, reminding me that perseverance can turn even the most daunting hurdles into opportunities for growth and success. And for all my successes, I owe much to the selfless support of my wife and the radiant smile of my beloved daughter, Meher. Their unwavering encouragement fuels my ambition and inspires me to strive for greater heights every day.

Thanks for sharing that. So, maybe next you can tell us a bit more about your work?
I am a Data Engineering Executive with over 14 years of experience in Business Intelligence and Data Services, specializing in enterprise software solutions that prioritize secure data delivery, reporting, and visualization. Throughout my career, I have provided critical data insights that empower businesses and stakeholders to make informed decisions.

As the Vice President of Data & Analytics at Regions Bank, I lead the Data Engineering team within the Home Improvement Division. In this role, I oversee reporting, data warehousing, ETL processes, and the implementation of data governance and quality frameworks. My extensive experience in the FinTech sector has enabled me to contribute significantly to key projects at EnerBank USA, such as the digitalization of loan platforms and the establishment of an integrated data repository that facilitates accurate and seamless downstream reporting. I have also played a pivotal role in several revenue-generating loan portfolio divestment initiatives, estimated at over $300M.

A critical aspect of my leadership has been driving the automation of our entire reporting ecosystem. Currently, 99% of our reporting and data delivery processes are automated through intuitive solutions. This transformation has not only optimized the performance of our data processing systems but has also saved hundreds of hours of manual labor on a recurring basis. Additionally, these improvements have minimized data quality issues, ensuring compliance and accuracy in regulatory reporting for the bank. My focus on innovation and efficiency has positioned our team as a leader in delivering data-driven insights that support strategic decision-making across the organization.

Do you have recommendations for books, apps, blogs, etc?
While I’m not an avid reader, I do enjoy exploring books and materials that focus on emerging data engineering technologies and AI. Currently, I’m reading the AI Leadership Handbook, which provides valuable insights into the nuances and applications of AI.

In the past, I’ve engaged with several impactful leadership books, including:

The Outward Mindset
The New One Minute Manager
The Go-Giver

To further enhance my skill set, I actively pursue informative certifications from prestigious universities. This commitment to continuous learning helps me stay at the forefront of my field and refine my leadership capabilities in the ever-evolving landscape of data engineering and AI.
